City bikes, shared-use bicycles that can be borrowed for a fee by anyone in central Helsinki, appeared on the streets of Helsinki on 2 May. Thanks to the open data by Helsinki Region Transport and Finnish technology companies Reaktor’s and Crasman’s programmers; the cyclists can now easily check the real-time status of every bike hub around the city centre. Reaktor’s kaupunkifillarit.fi and Crasman’s cityfillarit.fi apps have a map that shows the current number of free bikes and returning spots in Helsinki. This summer the central Helsinki area has altogether 500 bikes in 50 different locations. Anyone can use the bikes with a fee from 30 minutes to 5 hours at a time. After the ride, the bike has to be returned to a bike station.

Despite the abundance of digital neuroimaging data, shared thanks to all funding, data collection, and processing efforts, but also the goodwill of thousands of participants, its analysis is still falling behind. As a result, the insight into both mental disorders and cognition is compromised. The Open Neuroimaging Laboratory framework, promises a collaborative and transparent platform to optimise both the quantity and quality of this invaluable brain data, ultimately gaining a greater insight into both mental disorders and cognition. Maps that label geographic areas of conflict as “disputed” territories in India could put one behind bars for seven years with 1B Indian Rupees (US$15M) penalty if a recently proposed bill becomes law. The controversial bill, also known as Geospatial Information Regulation Bill 2016 would make it illegal to “depict, disseminate, publish or distribute any wrong or false topographic information of India including international boundaries through internet platforms or online services or in any electronic or physical form.” If approved, it could put large corporations like Google (with its Google map), free and open source projects like Wikipedia and Open Street Map, and several other organizations in trouble for showing areas of conflict as disputed.

This week the British Prime Minister David Cameron is hosting an international anti-corruption summit. The scourge of anonymous shell companies and hidden identities rightly seizes the public’s imagination. We can all picture the suitcases of cash and tropical islands involved. As well as acting on offshore and onshore money laundering havens, world leaders at the summit should also be asking themselves where all this money is being stolen from in the first place. The answer is mostly from public contracting: government spending through private companies to deliver works, goods and services to citizens. It is technical, dull and universally obscure. But it is the single biggest item of spending by government – amounting to a staggering $9,500,000,000,000 each year.

New York City is a complex place to drive.  And when it comes to parking, there are plenty of rules and regulations to follow.  It’s no wonder that sometimes people get confused and end up getting their cars ticketed or towed. But in all of these rules, there is one thing that very few drivers seem to know. As of late 2008, in NYC you can park in front of a sidewalk pedestrian ramp, as long as it’s not connected to a crosswalk.  It’s all written up in the NYC Traffic Rules, and for more detail, take a look at this article. The local legislation making these parking spots legal was proposed by Council Member Gentile, and adopted by the Department of Transportation before it ever made it for a vote.  Though few people seem to know about the change.

Today at Apache Big Data North America 2016, the Open Data Platform initiative (ODPi) announced that it has become a gold sponsor of the Apache Software Foundation (ASF). ODPi will join the ranks of the other gold sponsors such as Pivotal, IBM, WANDisco, and Hortonworks (it should be noted that all of the other sponsors are members of ODPi). The gold sponsors are working together to advance open source projects for the big data ecosystem. ODPi was recently founded (February 2015), and is nonprofit. The main goal of ODPi is to accelerate the open ecosystem of big data solutions.

The rift between the Open Data Platform Initiative (ODPi) and the Apache Software Foundation (ASF) is on the mend, thanks in part to a peace offering by ODPi, an admission of being indelicate, and a $40,000 check. It may not pacify everybody in the Apache Hadoop community who feel threatened by ODPi’s presence, but at least it’s a start. With its financial commitment, ODPi becomes a gold sponsor in the ASF, which manages 350 open source projects, about 10 percent of which could be considered “big data” projects. ASF Vice Chairman Greg Stein, one of the original founders of the open source organization, welcomed ODPi into the fold. “We are pleased to welcome ODPi to the ASF Sponsorship program and their support of Apache big data projects,” Stein said in a press release.

We are talking new products, new services and so on. Benefits in terms of performance, customer experience management and enhanced processes have been underlined numerous times. Transparency, accountability and participation are also key benefits the reuse of open data can yield. Data can also be used by public administrations at different levels of government. It might sound less sexy than the popular image of a startup working in a shiny environment. But it’s a fact. Government is one of the main re-users of its own data.

The good news? The open data really did lead to change. Wellington’s discoveries prompted the NYPD to investigate its practices, and it learned that only traffic agents got full training on the pedestrian ramp rule. Patrol officers didn’t — and to no one’s surprise, they were the ones writing most of the bad tickets. The force is now making sure that all officers understand the parking law, and it’s implementing a digital tracking system to catch these problems before they get out of hand. There’s no guarantee that other cities will be quite so willing to expose their inner workings, but this kind of data-driven progress suggests that they should.

BERKELEY — In a move toward greater transparency, arrest and booking data will henceforth be available online, the result of a collaboration between the Berkeley Police Department’s Support Services Division and the city’s IT Department. The open data portal will enable the public to look at arrest and booking data over a 30-day period, according to a police department news release. An Arrest Log provides information for adults arrested by Berkeley police while a Booking Log covers any law enforcement agency utilizing the Berkeley jail. Arrests include both felonies and misdemeanors and address those persons booked into the jail facility and those cited and released with a future court date, according to the news release. Both logs are updated daily at 9 a.m.
