With an eye on “big plans, small projects”, South Australia is fast-tracking its digital reforms agenda. The state’s CIO, Bret Morris, told CIO Australia that it is focusing mostly on mobile apps and open data. “We are shifting from eGovernment thinking to digital government thinking,” said Morris.” This gives us the opportunity to reassess where we can position ourselves in the service value chain. Morris said business and communities can contribute more through the development of mobile applications by having access to open data. “Government agencies are developing mobile applications. By continuing to open up non-sensitive government-held data, they are giving digital entrepreneurs the opportunity to build their own for local and global marketplaces.

The state of Hawaii, the city of Washington, D.C., and Oakland County, Mich., are home to the best government websites in the nation. These sites topped the 2014 Best of the Web awards, a joint project of Government Technology and e.Republic’s Center for Digital Government, which highlights the public sector’s evolving capabilities on the Web. Winners were announced Oct. 7. In three categories – state, city and county – nearly 300 government websites were judged on their innovative qualities, usefulness, and efficiency and economy. A panel comprising last year’s winners, former government officials and executives from the Center for Digital Government selected websites that tried new things, while remaining functional.

National network making decade of community data available to public OTTAWA, Oct. 7, 2014 /CNW/ – After almost a decade of collecting and collating important data on community wellbeing, Community Foundations of Canada (CFC) is opening up its national database and inviting Canadians to ‘mash’ the data at a national hackathon. The network for Canada’s 191 community foundation has been collating data from government and other sources since 2006 under its Vital Signs program, which seeks to provide Canadians with a comprehensive picture of quality of life in their community. “Bringing disparate sets of data together under Vital Signs has created a powerful picture of community wellbeing and a blueprint for community action,” said Ian Bird, President of Community Foundations of Canada.

GARTNER SYMPOSIUM REPORT: Microsoft positions itself as champion of open data and of cities. Plus a video report ORLANDO — You might think of Microsoft as a product company. You might not think of  it as a champion of privacy or open data. But you might have to think again. This is one of a series of posts from the Gartner Symposium and IT Expo that I’m attending here.  This is part of Day 1 of this event. Mark Day, business manager of public sector for Microsoft presented what some might see as a new approach for the company here. Presenting as part of “Industry Day” in the government track, Day emphatically stated “we (Microsoft) don’t turn over data in response to a national security order.” Further, he noted, “we will challenge any request for access to customer data.

Redbooth — formerly Teambox — hopes developers will create new business tools as it launches an API to enable its collaboration-as-a-service platform. The new API allows developers to create in-app integrations that synchronize and extend business process workflows. For example, the API can allow a customer-support issue received via Zendesk to be automatically forwarded as a new task to the relevant support team, a common business workflow that usually is managed manually and requires duplicative data entry. “Redbooth is all about collaboration,” Bruno Pedro, Redbooth’s Director of Platform, told ProgrammableWeb. “We are a task-oriented product, focused on real-time, unified collaboration. We are available on a number of different devices, in a number of different ways.

The awards program is the original and most respected state and local government website competition in the United States, honoring outstanding government portals and websites based on their innovations, functionality and efficiencies. The BOW awards are open to states, counties, cities, towns and villages to nominate their official websites in three BOW categories: State Portal, County Portal, and City Portal.
