More than 100 years of records held by IP Australia are now publicly available, for free. The first release of data under the Intellectual Property Government Open Data (IPGOD) project contains information on patents, trademarks, designs and plant breeder’s rights, detailing each aspect of the application process, from application through to the granting of IP rights. “It can also be interrogated to find out where innovation has occurred by geographic location, business size and technology,” IP Australia said. The information being made available comprises more than 350 million data points and will be updated annually. “We have published a paper to accompany IPGOD which describes the data and illustrates its use, as well as a technical paper,” the Agency said.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee has slammed Internet companies who propose so-called “Internet slow lanes” in order to extract more money from their customers. He made the remarks at IP EXPO Europe in London, during his keynote speech. “There are times when ISPs might consider slowing down your packets because they wonder if you’re making them enough money,” Berners-Lee told the crowd. “But when that happens, usually the public comes down on them. Like in Holland, when Comcast tried to slow down Skype packets, and legislation came in to protect it.” He took the opportunity to champion the open values of the Internet that he said helped foster its beginnings.

Martin Moore, director of the Media Standards Trust and the author of a recent report on the deficit of local news in the UK, argues that more needs to be done to foster innovation among local news and civic technology providers. You’ll remember the scene from It’s a Wonderful Life: the angel Clarence shows George Bailey what Bedford Falls would look like if he had never existed. Mr Potter owns virtually everything in the town. There are pawnshops, night clubs and neon bars all down the high street. Nothing functions in the re-named ‘Pottersville’ without Mr Potter taking a cut. In five years’ time, a new media giant such as Google or Facebook could have a similar stranglehold on our local media. Our local print press continues to decline.

‘De regering zal het Centrum voor Cybersecurity België operationaliseren. There’s an open government policy boom, and now’s the time for tech communities to weigh in. That’s one of the themes Alisha Green, a policy associate at the Sunlight Foundation, will address this month at Technical.ly’s Rise conference. The two-day event will bring together civic tech leaders from the five markets we cover across the Northeast Corridor, to trade ideas and share their experience on topics like open government, community organizing and public-private partnerships. Data visualization service Silk allows users to create visualizations from their data sources and offers an API to help developers instantly create Web pages with embedded visualizations.
