Using data to pinpoint high crime areas CrimeBot (www.crimebot.net) fights crime by providing crime hotspot views and sending out alerts based on locations through mobile devices. By allowing citizens to submit information about suspicious activity in real-time, CrimeBot also serves as a tool to fight back against crime and criminals. Today, the international open-access open-data journal GigaScience (a BGI and BioMed Central journal) announced publication of an article that presents GWATCH, a new web-based platform that provides visualization tools for identifying disease-associated genetic markers from privacy-protected human data without risk to patient privacy. This dynamic online tool, developed by an international team of researchers from Russia, Australia, Canada, and the US, allows and facilitates disease gene discovery via automation and presentation of intuitive data visualization tools. GWATCH provides results in three dimensions via a scrolling (Guitar Hero-like) chromosome highway.

A day before mid-term elections, the political media is going crazy with “What If” scenarios.  “Will Democrats or Republicans control the Senate?”  “Who will win at the individual State level?” and even, “What does this all mean for the 2016 elections?”  While the outcome of many political races remains uncertain, one thing government officials – both incumbent or newly elected – can say with certainty today is that open data is here to stay. Last Friday, we published the Socrata 2014 Open Data Benchmark Report, conducted by independent research firm, EMC Research, and commissioned by Socrata.  The online research study asked more than 1,200 participants – 961 of whom were self-identified as working in government in the United States – their views on Open Data.

The Open Data concept was initiated in 2008, this was also known as the Open Government Infomation and Data Work Programme. The EU is putting €14m (£10.9m) behind open data in a bid to replicate the success of the UK’s Open Data Institute (ODI). €7.8m will fund the Open Data Incubator for Europe, while the remaining money will go towards a research network and an academy to train data scientists. Announced at the ODI Summit in London, it is the largest direct investment in open data startups in the world. The funding will be divided into three pots with the following briefs: The ODI’s Startup Programme has so far supported 18 companies that use open data as part of their service, with the aim of helping them develop a sustainable business. Companies on the programme have secured over £2.5m (€3.2m) in funding and investment since joining.

The ODI and Universities UK, have today (4th November) announced that they will lead a project involving a group of top UK universities, the National Union of Students (NUS) and Jisc to explore the opportunities open data presents the higher education (HE) sector in the UK. The project is called “Creating Value from Open Data”. The partner universities include: The University of Aberdeen, University of Cambridge, The University of Edinburgh, University of Greenwich, University of Oxford, and The Open University. They join the University of Southampton, a founding ODI partner. The project, which begins today, will see the partners research how open data can bring about tangible benefits for UK higher education institutions.
