At today’s Data2X event in New York City, Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources Heather Higginbottom along with former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, jointly committed to Data2X’s mission to promote gender-sensitive data. Deputy Secretary Higginbottom underscored the importance of gender-sensitive data for building an evidence base that will lead to more effective policy and development decisions. She also announced that, for the first time, the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief’s (PEPFAR) newly redesigned PEPFAR Dashboards will now include data disaggregated by age and sex. This is part of the U.S. government’s commitment to making the empowerment of women and girls a foundational goal of U.S.

Last week, Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude announced the release of additional flood risk assessment data to help local communities plan their response. Arup’s Damien McCloud agrees that open data could help planners and designers answer increasingly complex questions about the built environment. His blog was originally posted here. Planners employ data to understand space through its physical attributes, as well as its human, social and functional characteristics. A variety of datasets are also used to understand how a space is currently used and experienced by those who inhabit it. Employees at the Office of Personnel Management and the State Department were sent home to telework on Dec. 15 after a blown transformer at OPM caused power outages across several blocks of Washington, D.C. Washington’s Metropolitan Police Department announced that OPM offices had been evacuated, but no foul play was suspected. The Associated Press reported that the outage also affected the General Services Administration, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., the Federal Reserve, the Labor Department and the U.S. Park Police. Power at the White House reportedly went out briefly as well, but a Pepco spokesperson said that incident was unrelated to the transformer problem at OPM.

The Defense Department put a set of Dell networking switches on its approved product list, certifying the systems were designed and built according to DOD interoperability and security requirements and clearing the technology for use in federal networks. Dell’s S4810, S4820T, S6000 and Z9000 software-defined network (SDN)-ready switches were added to DOD’s Unified Capabilities Approved Products List, the company said. The APL works as a seal of approval from DOD that the products work with its networks. It’s also useful for smaller agencies that lack resources to do their own certification, said Dell officials.

More than two years after Hurricane Sandy battered the East Coast, the White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy officially launched a portal to aggregate open disaster-related data from across the country. Launched on disasters.data.gov, the featured data is designed to act as a public resource for those impacted by disasters, and help government and the private sector respond to crises as quickly as possible. The portal was announced in an OSTP blog post jointly written by the White House’s Brian Forde, the National Security Council’s Heather King and the Homeland Security Department’s Meredith Lee. “Strengthening our nation’s resilience to disasters is a shared responsibility, with all community members contributing their unique skills and perspectives,” the post said.

In a move towards proactive disclosure, the City of Grande Prairie is now offering free online access to raw data sets through a web page launched Monday. The wide-ranging data portal includes useful tools such as an interactive map of the city trails, the vote count and voter turnout of the last municipal election, and all of the city’s area-structure plans with zoning designations. At data.cityofgp.com, the information is organized into an open data catalogue and is free to re-purpose, re-use, export and examine. Made up predominantly of spreadsheets from various departments and map-based information from the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) department, the data dump is part of the city’s effort to foster an “open data culture” and improve transparency.
