The company is the first in the medical technology industry to offer this kind of data sharing, and its collaboration with the Yale project already includes access to drug trial data.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved an initiative to create a one-stop-shop for county data ranging from crime statistics to election data. Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, who recommended development of a single portal for county information, said it would usher in a new era of transparency and information accessibility. “This initiative is simply a historic shift,” Ridley-Thomas said. “Our vast trove of data and public records will be readily available in a user- friendly form for the first time.” The website — www.data.lacounty.gov — is expected to combine information from 37 departments on a single dashboard where data can be easily searched and downloaded in machine-readable format.

SINGAPORE: As Singapore works towards having a more ‘open data architecture’ – this means more data will be available and verifiable to the Government, private sector and individuals. This could be beneficial for society as a whole Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister-in-Charge of the Smart Nation Programme Office said at the Roundtable of Thought Leaders on Innovation in Cities meeting on Monday (Jan 19). The two-day event is organised by the Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), and brings together 90 leading thinkers from around the world to look at how big data can affect social behaviour and government policy.

Data regulator warns against dividing existing powers between different bodies, but backs change to parliamentary accountability The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) wants to maintain its existing structure as a single regulatory body, while supporting switching accountability from the government to parliament as part of a Ministry of Justice (MoJ) ‘triennial review’ into its operations. With the deadline for submissions for the review – which aims to set out plans for the future direction and structure of the ICO – now closed, the regulator warned against splitting its operations into a wider number of bodies.

Open data is a much talked about topic worldwide. Data is a raw material that can be processed into new innovations, intelligent services that ease our everyday lives, new business, and even new export products. The six biggest cities of Finland have launched extensive cooperation to utilize the opportunities offered by open data. In the newly launched 6Aika Open Data and Interfaces spearhead project the cities of Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Tampere, Turku and Oulu join forces to open their datasets as widely as possible and to offer them to developers as open data, creating new joint operating environments for data producers and data users. The cities’ datasets become available to enterprises, educational and research institutes, and application developers.
