Imagine typing “John Singer Sargeant” into a search engine and being able to see every painting the artist ever made that’s owned by an American museum. Today it’s not that simple. Museum collections are like closed-off silos that you have to access individually to get the information you want. The Smithsonian Museum of American Art hopes to change that. It has launched the American Art Collaborative (ACC), a consortium of 14 museums across the country that will connect these silos, creating what you might call the art-world version of the Digital Public Library of America.

As industries move forward by embracing the technology available and relevant to them, UK banks seem to have fallen somewhat behind. In an article for ProgrammableWeb back in December, Mark Boyd covered the news that, according to the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s Autumn Statement (section 1.171), “the government is keen to enable more innovation around bank data and will launch a call for evidence on how to deliver standardized application programming interfaces in the banking industry.” The situation was updated last week on Out-Law.com with the news that the UK Treasury has launched a call for evidence on data sharing and open data in banking. The idea is for UK banks to develop a publicly available API that is both single and common.

Zillow Chairman Rich Barton and former U.S. Deputy CTO Nick Sinai kicked off a weekend hackathon Friday night where 400+ developers are being tasked to come up with solutions for first-time homebuyers, low-income renters and senior citizens to find a home that meets their needs. This hackathon demonstrates an interesting collaboration between the private and public sector, with datasets provided by Zillow, Socrata and a newly-released set of HUD geospatial data released specifically for this event on topics like federal housing programs, apartment buildings and transit information. Barton started the evening by crediting open government data as both the inspiration and reason that they were able to create Zillow.

The call for more systemic changes to prevent mega-hacks is getting louder after hackers hit Anthem, the nation’s second-largest health insurer. The company says cyberthieves gained access to the addresses, employment information and Social Security numbers of 80 million customers and employees. Eighty million individuals is a lot — it’s roughly the populations of California, Texas and Illinois combined. “It’s large in health care. It’s probably the largest health care breach that we’ve seen, and maybe that the government has seen,” says Katherine Keefe, who leads global cybersecurity response for Beazley, which insures businesses against data breaches. Keefe is not working with Anthem on this but does help protect other insurers.

New Zealanders continue to enjoy one of the most open and transparent governments in the world, according to the latest Open Data Barometer Global Report. The reports shows that New Zealand has retained its 4th place ranking internationally and we continue to lead the Asia-Pacific region in the release of government data. New Zealand was ranked third based on the datasets released, scoring highly for the release of map and land ownership data, as well as census, budget, legislation, international trade and crime statistics. Three times as much government data is now available for people to take and reuse compared to this time last year. LINZ is leading the Open Data work across government, and we also release more data than any other agency.

In this week’s edition of our open source news roundup, we take a look at Microsoft’s investment in Cyanogen, U.S. government budget data on GitHub, the debut of the Raspberry Pi 2, and more! It was just over a week ago when Kirk McMaster, CEO of Cyanogen (a free and open source smartphone operating system based on Android), proclaimed his company wants to take Android away from Google. It seems McMaster might be getting some help from an unlikely source. According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Microsoft is taking a minority position in a private funding round for Cyanogen. That funding, reportedly worth $70 million, will value Cyanogen at several hundred million. While neither party has commented on this, it could be a game changer for Cyanogen.

Capgemini has been awarded a three year contract by the European Commission for the deployment of an EU open data core platform. The goal of the project will be to launch and operate a single large-scale pan-European Open Data Portal, designed to bring together public data resources from all 39 European countries. The data will be made fully public, so that every European resident who has the internet will be able to access it. Capgemini Consulting will lead the three year engagement and will co-ordinate with a number of consortium members and subcontractors, including; Sogeti, Intrasoft International, Open Data Institute, the University of Southampton as well as others.

If you’ve ever wondered how much your neighbour shelled for that house all those years ago but didn’t really want to pay to find out, a solution may soon be at hand. The NSW government is proposing to throw open its database to provide recent property sales histories for free. Under the proposal announced by Finance Minister Dominic Perrottet, government data collected and held by the Department of Land and Property Information would be made available to the public. Rather than paying a commercial provider such as Core Logic RP Data or the Fairfax Media-owned APM PriceFinder, anyone from prospective home-buyers to the just plain nosy would be able to download the information at no cost.

The aim of these 4 trainings is to increase young researchers’ competence on open science and to develop practical skills on open access publishing and research data management. The series of workshops and a roundtable discussion with different stakeholders (policy makers, funding agencies institutional managers, research administrators, etc.) will be organized during the events. Representatives from the Research Council of Lithuania, Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania, the National Points of Reference on Access to and Preservation of Scientific Information will participate in the round table discussion.
