Amid a growing interest in civic tech–technology aimed at improving the civic life of communities and boosting overall engagement–a new coworking space in New York City recently opened for social enterprises and other folks. Called Civic Hall, its co-founders are Andrew Rasiej and Micah Silfry, who also are co-founders of Personal Democracy Media, which, among other things, runs the Personal Democracy Forum, a conference about how technology is changing politics. “Technology has a huge potential to impact the civic arena,” says Rasiej. The goal: to turn the 18,500 square foot Civic Hall into a community center for people interested in making the world a better place through technology and social innovation.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 9, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — NGO alliance InterAction is pleased to announce that FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) has awarded additional funding of $400,000 for InterAction’s NGO Aid Map through December 2015. The map, an online, interactive tool that details the work of U.S.-based, international NGOs at the project level, has evolved over time with support from FedEx. In 2014, the focus shifted from mapping U.S. NGOs response to one crisis to a global mapping of InterAction members’ development programming and emergency response efforts. FedEx began supporting the initiative in January 2011 and now has given over $1.4 million toward the effort.

California’s extensive state park system is a guarantee that all the state’s citizens, not just the moneyed elite, will have access in perpetuity to the state’s embarrassment of natural riches—mountains, beaches, deserts, forests, you name it. In recent years, however, the system has been damaged by financial woes and scandals. First, budget shortfalls threatened to shut down 70 of the 278 parks in the system, and led to cutbacks in hours and services at others. Then, after nonprofits and private groups raised money to save individual parks, it turned out the parks system’s administrators had been sitting on more than $50 million in unspent funds—a scandal that led to the resignation of the state’s parks director and the creation of the Parks Forward Commission.

When you hear about big data, you might think of nefarious data brokers selling your browsing history or governments demanding logs of your phone’s GPS coordinates. But the data that overwhelms our modern world is just as often being used for good and can improve our lives in completely banal ways we don’t even notice—like making the buses run on time. At least that’s what New York City Council Member Ben Kallos is hoping open data from the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) could do. Kallos represents Manhattan’s Upper East Side and his constituents, like most New Yorkers, complain that MTA buses are frequently late (read a previous Fast Company profile of Kallos here).

The federal government is going to release lists of agency data holdings in response to Freedom of Information Act requests by the Sunlight Foundation, which heralded the pending disclosure as providing access to “what we believe to be the largest index of government data in the world.” The Office of Management and Budget collects inventories of data holdings from government agencies as part of the Obama administration’s open-data policy. According to a Sunlight blog post, those Enterprise Data Inventories give the public “an unprecedented view into data held internally across government.” OMB initially sought to deflect the Sunlight request by routing it to individual agencies that produced the data inventories.

Out of the nation’s 70 largest cities, a recent report ranks Chicago as the 14th best when it comes to the availability of “technology-enabled” transportation tools and options that make it easier for people to travel without owning a vehicle. For its study, the Illinois PIRG Education Fund and Frontier Group examined whether residents in the 70 U.S. cities have access to 11 various transportation technologies, including those used to hail taxis and share rides, cars and bicycles. Researchers also looked at the availability of real-time transit information; transit scheduling and routing data; multi-modal transit apps; and virtual transit ticketing, allowing riders to pay for fares via smartphones.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Members of Project Slumlord are fighting to save their neighborhoods. They want to eliminate blight in Buffalo. “There are properties that are owned by landlords who don’t live in proximity to the house, don’t live in the house and they don’t pay attention to the kind of tenants they get, nor do they pay attention to property maintenance,” Patty Macdonald, the coordinator of Project Slumlord said. She says rundown and vacant properties impact the safety of the community. “All of the problems in the city stem from bad housing: drug dealing, criminal activity, abuse to people inside the house.” Franczyk said. “The city has to pay to board up or demolish these houses and it’s just a burden on the neighborhoods.
