The White House’s 2013 mandate to open data has spurred many agencies to act, but just opening data to meet requirements doesn’t mean the data will be useful. To help agency IT managers decide what datasets are worth opening, a new formula offers an entrée to the thought process. “It was hard to have a conversation about open data because lots of people have biases, like people want government to open more data, government is a little bit scared of opening the data. As the recently appointed inaugural chief data officer for the Commerce Department, Ian Kalin says he doesn’t yet know exactly how he will gauge success. But he knows one thing for sure: He won’t measure it in a “stereotypical bureaucratic fashion.” Kalin brings both a business background, as the former director of open data for the startup Socrata, and government experience, as an Energy Department presidential innovation fellow. PETALING JAYA: The Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) has announced two initiatives to drive open data among government ministries and agencies. In a statement released yesterday, MDeC said one of the initiatives is a strategic partnership with Open Data Institute (ODI), an independent, non-profit expert in open data. Besides that, MDeC has also launched National Open Data Champions, comprising a group of selected individuals to advise and support government agencies on open data implementation and execution. Open government data is non-personal, non-sensitive data that can be accessed, used or shared by anyone.

IN an attempt to get government ministries and agencies to open up their data sets, Malaysia’s national ICT custodian the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) has announced two Open Data initiatives. The first is a strategic partnership with Open Data Institute (ODI), an independent, non-profit expert in Open Data; and the second is the launch of ‘National Open Data Champions,’ a group of selected individuals to advise and support government agencies on Open Data implementation and execution. The announcement was made in collaboration with the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (Mampu), MDeC said in a statement.

Los Angeles Controller Ron Galperin unveiled a website Thursday that lists a variety of metrics city departments report annually to their office. The data include the number of people employed in a department, how many fires occurred in a year and other types of information tracked by the city. The website, at www.controlpanel.la/cafr/, also allows users to compare the latest figures with those of past years. For example, the Animal Services department reported that 35,315 animals were adopted in Fiscal Year 2014, which begins July 2013 and ends June 2014. That is up from 2005 when 18,879 animals were adopted. Meanwhile, the number of euthanized animals reported by the Animal Services Department was 15,028 in FY 2014, down from 2005 when 25,029 animals were killed.
