Seventy years from now one area of Queensland could be the country’s best refuge for thousands of animals as it remains relatively untouched by climate change. Newly released mapping based on data from Far North Queensland-based James Cook University predicts much of the country will suffer a dramatic loss of animal species but large parts of the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range will be much more resilient. The research, led by Centre for Tropical Biodiversity and Climate Change director Dr Jeremy VanDerWal, found these less-affected areas would hold on to a greater potential to support “significant wildlife populations”. “Because of the topography it means that species can move up those slopes to higher elevations,” he said.

Citizens, government workers, and civic technologists cheered across Ohio, the United States, and beyond last week. The City of Cincinnati propelled Ohio municipalities into a new era of transparency and efficiency with the launch of their open data portal –  . The portal launch is the culmination of efforts that began in City Council under the charge of Councilman P.G. Sittenfeld. Mayor John Cranley similarly echoes Sittenfeld’s goals around transparency, efficiency, and innovation. “A government that is transparent and accessible will inevitably do a better job because it will be held accountable by its stakeholders,” Cranley says.

All Australians should have free and open access to information about how our society operate Australia is a nation that cares about promoting transparency, empowering citizens, fighting corruption and using new technologies to strengthen governance. At least, this can be assumed given our commitment to the global Open Government Partnership. But if this is so, then why is Australia slow to act, according to data on that very website? Our commitment to promoting transparency, supporting active citizenship or fighting corruption can also be questioned. However, there is progress both in open access and open data, so perhaps it’s a lack of prioritising such international commitments within our growing “open” movement.

RENO, Nev. — Google has announced the official launch of its Government Innovation Labs, with California’s Alameda and Kern counties as pilot jurisdictions. Another four spots will open for other localities later this year. James Waterman, Google’s regional manager for state and local government, publicized the news during his keynote address at the Government Social Media Conference & Expo in Reno on April 30. He said the program, first unveiled in January, will provide officials at all levels of government access to Google’s suite of enterprise apps, developers and experts for consultation on beneficial services both inside and outside of Google.

Organizations are increasingly turning to an internal, or private, cloud to run their data center operations, while de-emphasizing their use of public clouds, according to a recent survey from the Open Data Center Alliance (ODCA). The accompanying “Cloud Adoption Survey” report reveals that while reservations about cloud deployment are generally declining, concerns about security and vendor lock-in still present the greatest barriers to adoption. At the same time, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of companies seeking to use software-defined networking models to direct purchasing decisions. Organizations “are focused primarily on internal cloud solutions,” according to the report.

What if you could take a huge amount of traffic data and use it to accurately pinpoint which portions of a busy road will experience congestion before it actually happens? Or effectively determine what the traffic impact will be if a large infrastructure project does, or does not, get built? In a city as gridlock-choked as Toronto, drastic steps are needed to address congestion, and the idea of making use of so-called Big Data is gaining traction among an enthusiastic collection of city officials, including Mayor John Tory, who are convinced the answer to alleviating Toronto’s often nightmarish traffic lies in making use of trillions of bytes of data to analyze traffic patterns on a massive scale never seen before locally.

As part of its Open Government initiative, Ontario is the first province to post a draft Open Data Directive for public feedback. Ontario’s Open Data Directive aims to make data that the government collects and generates on topics, like school enrollment and traffic volume on provincial highways, open to the public. Open data does not contain personal or confidential information. Public uses for this data could include building maps, apps and models that can help Ontario tackle gridlock or make health care service options more accessible. Ontario is sharing the draft directive to make sure it reflects the needs and input of Ontarians.

Ontario’s Open Government initiative is helping to create a more transparent, accessible and collaborative government for the people of Ontario. Ontario is moving forward on a strategy and action plan to advance Open Government through three streams – Open Dialogue, Open Information and Open Data. This will give the public opportunities to weigh-in on government decision-making, strengthen transparency and accountability, and improve access to government data and services. Ontario appointed an Open Government Engagement Team that travelled across the province and consulted with Ontarians on how the government can become more open. The Engagement Team submitted its recommendations to government in March 2014.

While the red box George Osborne paraded in front of the news media last month was certainly not short on potentially vote-winning promises, it also contained a number of important details that were lost in the ensuing flood of coverage in print and online. Amongst these was the announcement that HM Treasury intends “to deliver an open API standard in UK banking” by the end of 2015. Clearly, as policies go, this is unlikely to sway voters in one direction or another when it comes to polling day, yet it may prove to be a defining moment for the financial services industry in the United Kingdom.
