Syngenta is sharing data via the Internet to help farmers increase productivity and sustainability. The data include 2014 baseline information for agricultural-efficiency indicators collected on 3,600 farms in 41 countries across Europe, Africa, Latin America, North America and Asia Pacific. The data represent about 200 crop-climate combinations. Making such data public is blurring the traditional roles of business, government and non-governmental organizations by highlighting collective responsibilities to address acute global challenges, said Mike Mack, chief executive officer of Syngenta.

LinkedIn Corp (NYSE:LNKD) searchable database revealed resumes of more than 27,000 US intelligence communities. The search mine created by Transparency Toolkit is called ICWatch and will include the resumes of the people who are working in the military and intelligence agencies or as intelligence contractors. According to Transparency Toolkit, the resumes are in detail and reveal the functioning of the secret surveillance programs, their names, and the secret code words previously not disclosed. The resumes are available in searchable form so that people can use them for understanding the process of mass surveillance better. The resumes are expected to unravel the research trends carried out by the intelligence community.

Read a press release from U.S. Senator Mark Warner on the DATA Act designed to improve transparency of federal agencies. Oh Friday, the White House Office of Management and Budget and the U.S. Department of the Treasury announced a major step forward in standardizing and reporting federal spending as required under the Digital Accountability and Transparency Act. The DATA Act, which was introduced in the Senate by Sens. Mark Warner (D-VA) and Rob Portman (R-OH) and signed into law by President Obama on May 9, 2014, requires federal agencies to account for every dollar they spend on a single website in an easy-to-read format that will allow taxpayers and lawmakers to better track waste, fraud and abuse across all agencies.

It is the database that runs Google’s Internet search, Google Maps, YouTube, Gmail, and other products you’ve likely heard of. It’s a big, powerful database that handles lots of different data types. Large corporations such as Amazon, Ebay, Google, Facebook and LinkedIn are as much data science companies as they are leaders of specific domains. Global data science market is projected to be worth $320 billion by year 2020, says Graham Williams, data scientist at data processor company Togaware as well as the Australia Taxation Office. According to McKinsey, there will be shortage of over 1.8 lakh data scientists in the US by 2018, given the explosive growth rate of the sector. Data mining tool Williams was speaking at a three-day workshop on ‘Data mining and analytics with R’ organised here by the International Centre for Free and Open Source Software. ‘R’ is the most widely-used data mining and analytics tool globally for statistics and data science.
