The Pew Research Center recently released a report that explores Americans’ views of open government data. The findings come from a survey of 3,212 members of the Pew Research Center’s American Trends Panel. Data collection is a core government function. The government collects data on demographics, economic change, climate activity, and many other areas relevant to public policy. There is a growing effort to make government activities more transparent by encouraging the release of more government-collected data to the public. Many Americans hope that increased data transparency will aid journalists, make officials more accountable, and improve decision making. Few think that government at the local, state, and federal levels are doing a great job of providing useful data.

A cornerstone of good government, transparency can foster accountability, fuel entrepreneurship and improve government performance. But the publication of data alone doesn’t inherently make them useful. Although local agencies are releasing more data than ever before, a lot is lying fallow because they’re often in an unsearchable file format, such as in a PDF, making the information difficult to find and analyze.

Today I continue my series highlighting repositories for paleontological raw data. Previous posts in this series can be found here, here, and here. MorphoSource is a data repository for 3D data – raw CT and microCT data, but also surface models, slice movies, and 2D images. It’s the brainchild of Doug Boyer, an Evolutionary Anthropology professor at Duke. While there are plenty of data repositories for 2D images (e.g., MorphoBank and MorphBank), there really isn’t an equivalent for raw 3D data. Yes, some sites like Dryad or Figshare can host CT datasets (as Andy and I did for our 2013 “Dinosaur Joe” paper), and the website DigiMorph hosts these data in a more limited format, but currently there’s no dedicated repository for raw CT data.
