A team of SFU computing science students has won a 48-hour “appathon” during which they conceived and built an app to help Canadian high school students compare the costs of a post-secondary education anywhere in the country. Canadian Open Data Experience (CODE) 2015, hosted by the federal government, invited software developers, graphic designers, students and interested individuals to create an app using Government of Canada open data available on the CODE site. The competition also encouraged participants to mash up these federal data sets with provincial, territorial and municipal data found on the site’s “Open Government across Canada” page. SFU team members Jonathan Bhaskar, Bradley Ellert, Jasneet Sabharwal and Maryam Siahbani won the $5,000 prize for Best Student Team.

Thunder Bay, ON, Esri Canada User Conference – May 13, 2015 – Rural municipalities may not have the same information technology infrastructure as their urban counterparts, but this does not mean that they cannot achieve the same efficiencies as bigger municipalities. The West Parry Sound Geography Network (WPSGN) – a partnership of seven small rural municipalities in West Parry Sound – is a great example of this. As data becomes more important in shaping the country’s day-to-day decision-making, the Center for Data Innovation has some ideas for how Congress can fast track U.S. data innovation –a dozen of them, to be exact. On Monday, the organization published a to-do list detailing the legislative steps Congress can take in 2015 to improve the country’s data collection, organization and dissemination. Because although the federal government may be capable of handling its piles of data better than any other entity in the world, the report said it’s still not living up to its potential. “These are specific policy recommendations with clear paths to success,” the report stated.

We might be living longer than ever before, but the Australian government’s plan to keep older people in the workforce may not be that easy. The predictions are that by 2055 the nation will have a population of 39.7 million people with the number of people aged 65 and over expected to double, a testament to healthier lifestyles and medical science. Ageing populations are expensive, though. To offset the rising costs, governments are encouraging healthy older people to postpone retirement and keep working, at least until their 70s, and perhaps beyond. But jobs are not easy to come by these days. Youth unemployment in Australia is 4.5 times higher than the general rate, so keeping older workers in their jobs will not be helping to reduce youth unemployment.
