Arts and cultural organisations will soon have access to an online platform that aims to help them write stronger funding bids. ‘Culture Everywhere’ will collate publicly available data sets, which its developers hope will enable them to “more efficiently construct proposals that support and engage their communities and are attractive to funders”. The web platform will host more than a dozen data sets from sources such as the UK Census, Index of Multiple Deprivation and Arts Council England, and will encourage users to upload impact data from their own projects. It aims to reveal where funding is currently being directed and highlight any gaps in cultural provision. It will also host relevant research and good practice guides.

MarineTraffic, believes that open data can positively increase the competitiveness and efficiency of the shipping industry. Speaking at the Union for the Mediterranean stakeholder conference on the 27th May, “Towards a Roadmap for Blue Investment and Jobs in the Mediterranean” held in Athens, MarineTraffic managing director Demitris Memos said: “Activities taking place on the high seas have in the past been almost impossible to monitor. Consequently, it has been difficult for governments and businesses to work out what goes on. The world’s oceans have been and to an extent still are fairly ungovernable places. Companies in the maritime big data area are starting to make sense of sea-borne activity, increasing available knowledge and creating transparency on a global scale.

New Mapping Agreement to Benefit United Kingdom and Ireland Location Data Users Printer Friendly A new three party agreement between Ordnance Survey (GB), Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSi) and Land and Property Services (LPS) Northern Ireland is set to improve access and availability of mapping services for customers and government users operating across the UK and Ireland. The agreement will enable each of the national mapping organisations, for the first time, to act as a single point of access for customers choosing to view digital mapping from any of the three organisations via their web service platforms. On 28 May senior figures from the three organisations met in Belfast to officially sign the TriOS agreement.

The UK government must open up and highlight the power of more basic data sets to improve patient care in the NHS and save hundreds of millions of pounds a year, Nigel Shadbolt, chairman of the Open Data Institute (ODI) has urged. The UK government topped the first league table for open data (paywall) produced by the ODI last year but Shadbolt warns that ministers’ open data responsibilities have not yet been satisfied. Basic data on prescription administration is now published on a monthly basis but Shadbolt said medical practitioners must be educated about the power of this data to change prescribing habits across the country.

By 2020, electronic health records should support person-centric care delivery, according to an American Medical Informatics Association panel. To get there, health IT developers and policy-makers should work on: simplifying and increasing the speed of clinical documentation; refocusing government regulations; increasing transparency of EHR certification; and promoting innovation, the AMIA EHR-2020 Task Force said. But one start-up entrepreneur believes brands should be making data work harder for the customer, giving them more insight into where products come from and how they are made. British entrepreneur Jessi Baker has founded Provenance, which allows customers to track exactly how a product was made and where. Provenance enables brands to disclose the ‘lifetime’ of a product, such as the materials used, where it was manufactured and granular details of their supply chain. Its system hinges on the Blockchain, the verification technology that underpins bitcoin transactions. The Blockchain can ensure that some supply chain information is anonymous – something that will be reassuring to bigger brands – and keeps it secure.

California dodged a bullet late last year at the “Happiest Place on Earth.” Last December, a measles outbreak was traced to Disneyland. Before it was contained, it had spread to a half-dozen U.S. states, Mexico and Canada. Nearly 150 people in the United States caught the highly contagious virus. Considering this disease remains one of the leading causes of death among young children globally, miraculously, all those infected survived. During the outbreak, the New York Times created an informative, interactive map that allowed anyone to easily find out the vaccination rates for every Kindergarten class by school in the entire state of California. Parents could easily see how likely it was that their unvaccinated child could catch the virus if it spread to their community.

Recognizing the need for open data work that enhances global cooperation, reduces duplication, and supports the scaling of development solutions that work, a group of Donors have joined together to support a program that funds innovative open data initiatives around the developing world. The initial donors comprise of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), UK’s Department for International Development (DFID), the World Bank (WB), and Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD). The Fund, managed by IDRC, has firm commitments for a total value of $6.8M (CDN) for the next 2 years.
