Speaking at‘Towards a Roadmap for Blue Investment and Jobs in the Mediterranean’ held in Athens, Marine Traffic managing director Demitris Memos explained: “Activities taking place on the high seas have in the past been almost impossible to monitor. This is a relatively new position, established by the Obama administration in 2009 when Todd Park assumed the role, and HHS is obviously still getting a handle on what kind of candidate is best suited for it. Both Sivak and Park had entrepreneurial backgrounds—Park co-founded athenahealth and Castlight and Sivak co-founded InQuira and Electric Knowledge (albeit in the late ’90s and early ’00s). Fox comes primarily from a research background, although she is leaving a role as the Entrepreneur in Residence at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to take this position. Among the things Fox says she hopes to accomplish as the new CTO are to support and expand the data liberación work begun by Todd Park and nurture an entrepreneurial environment, which she credits Sivak for fostering.

For years, the Baltimore Neighborhood Indicators Alliance (BNIA) has gathered all sorts of data about life in Baltimore City. As national news reporters descended on the city in the wake of the unrest that followed Freddie Gray’s funeral, Seema Iyer saw a lot of the group’s work being cited everywhere. At the SocEnt Breakfast held last week at the Baltimore Metropolitan Council’s offices in McHenry Row, Iyer showed a slide full of news articles that rely on the data compiled by BNIA. “You notice that the news articles that came from Baltimore were a little bit different than the articles that came from New York and St. Louis,” Iyer said, referring to national articles about the Freddie Gray, Michael Brown and Eric Garner cases.

When it comes to eating out at restaurants, consumers often depend on municipal health department inspection scores to assess whether a food establishment is safe to visit. The Census Bureau’s City new software development kit (City SDK) gives civic hackers a toolkit building applications that take advantage of Census datasets. The SDK, released on June 1, takes the most common functionalities developers were building on top of the Census application programming interface and added them directly into the SDK, the Bureau said on the City SDK GitHub page. The City SDK includes code that converts latitude/longitude or ZIP codes to FIPS state and county codes; the ability to request GeoJSON (an open source geographic shapefile/boundary format) right along with data from Dataweb (for mapping); and a modular architecture that makes it easy to mashup Census data with third-party data.

Government data is changing what we know about the work doctors do, and is giving developers the ability to transform that data into useful tools. For the second year running, the government has released information on how doctors and other providers are charging Medicare. The physician utilization data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, covering $90 billion in payments across 950,000 providers, gives developers the raw material to build tools that allow for the comparison of doctors on a number of criteria, such as services delivered, charges submitted, and more. The news was announced at the sixth annual Health Datapalooza conference in Washington, D.C., on June 1.

Half a world away, University of Washington civil and envi­ron­men­tal engi­neer­ing stu­dents trace the out­lines of roads, paths and build­ings in Nepal from their lap­tops. Using open data soft­ware Open­StreetMap, the students in assistant professor Jes­sica Kamin­sky’s Civil Engi­neer­ing in Devel­op­ing Com­mu­ni­ties class joined an online com­mu­nity effort to turn satel­lite imagery of Nepal into maps and aid the earth­quake relief effort. These dig­i­tized maps provide emer­gency respon­ders and relief coordinators responding to the 7.8 magnitude earthquake and powerful aftershocks in Nepal with crit­i­cal data to guide teams deployed on the ground.
