The National Day of Civic Hacking  was June 6-7, and Sacramento did it up in style. With the support of the California HealthCare Foundation (CHCF), and run by Health 2.0, the weekend’s event focused on harnessing health data contained in the California Health and Human Services (CHHS) Agency’s Open Data Portal, with $20,000 in prize money at stake for the winners. Immediately apparent was the high level of interest the state health policy community has in seeing useful applications produced from the state’s data. Saturday morning, June 6, began with a statement of encouragement by State Sen. Richard Pan, who is himself a pediatrician and whose bill to create a chief data officer for the state has recently moved forward to the Assembly.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) today released a new widget that allows internet users to display interactive visualizations of current energy data from EIA on their own websites. The widget pulls user-selected data from EIA’s application programming interface (API) to create maps, line charts, pie charts, and bar graphs. Whether it’s about municipal reinvention, investment opportunity or collaboration, the inaugural City Innovate Summit aims to deliver a host of lessons in urban ingenuity when it debuts in San Francisco this week, June 17-18. Organized by the City Innovate Foundation (CiS), an innovation group composed of the San Francisco mayor’s office, U.C. Berkeley and the MIT Media Lab, the summit will gather 120-plus thought leaders, including a selection of U.S. and international mayors, nonprofits and venture capitalists, to discuss and debate key concepts in civic tech. Foundation Chairman Peter Hirshberg said the hope is for the event to have a catalyzing effect for municipal discourse and venture-backed civic innovation initiatives, a dialog that will be rejuvenated each year.

Philadelphia’s Office of Innovation and Technology was recognized for developing Open Data technology that creates more transparency in government. CIO named the city agency, which is led by Adel Ebeid, to its CIO 100 list. The rankings honor organizations from around the world that set the standard for operational and strategic excellence. “We appreciate this recognition because it credits our entire organization and isn’t typically awarded to government,” said Ebeid, the chief innovation officer, in a news release. “One reason we’ve been able to advance public facing initiatives like open data and digital inclusion is that we’ve strengthened our internal capacity to provide day-to-day technology support for city departments, and that’s a credit to our whole organization.

Philadelphia’s Office of Technology and Innovation has been recognized by a technology magazine for its focus on open data. The office selected for CIO Magazine’s “CIO 100,” an annual awards ceremony that recognizes organizations for their work in information technology. Philadelphia’s office was chosen for, among other things, releasing 190 open data sets through OpenDataPhilly.org and for the creation of the Philadelphia Property Search tool, which allows residents to search and compare property valuation data, and the AVI Calculator, which helps residents ensure their real estate tax is fair. The office’s Chief Innovation Officer Adel Ebeid said in a news release that the recognition was appreciated because government offices aren’t usually noticed by the awards.

The UK Environmental Agency has been capturing LiDAR data for more than 17 years. In that time, they’ve captured more than 72% of England’s land mass, including flood plains, coastal zones, and urban areas. That LiDAR data has helped the Environmental Agency to create flood models, assess coastal change, and examine how land is used. Two years ago, the agency made the tiled LiDAR data and the composite LiDAR data in their collection available for non-commercial use. Starting September 2015, they will make that same data available to everyone–commercial or not. When I spoke to Susan Winter, the marketing officer for the Environmental Agency, she explained why the agency decided to open the data up for commercial use.

Rwanda is set to introduce open data strategy to stimulate job opportunities for the young people. Open data is information made available by governments, businesses and other groups for anyone to read, use and share. “In an information and knowledge-based economy that Rwanda is increasingly turning into, Open Data is a precious national resource and a strategic asset of the country,” Jean Philbert Nsengimana, Rwanda minister of youth and ICT told reporters shortly after closing two-day open data forum on Sunday. The retreat brought together experts from various institutions that will champion the policy, data-holding/producing institutions and agencies that stand to benefit from an Open Data initiative.

Recently the Asian Institute of Management in collaboration with the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (Foundation) organized an event on “Institutionalizing Anti-Corruption and Good Governance”, bringing together experts from different think tanks in Asia and reform stakeholders in the Philippines, in order to discuss how to sustain anti-corruption reforms. This seems to be one of the prominent topics right now in the country, given the impending transfer of power to the next President in 2016.   At the event, presentations by Bureau of Customs Commissioner Bert Lina and Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales emphasized a number of accomplishments in the country’s anti-corruption campaign.

Tertiary education is no longer the domain of only those who can afford. In a border-less world, made so by Internet and mobile technologies, most people have access to knowledge. Online tertiary education will play a pivotal role in the University of West Indies’ (UWI) future. In a phone interview with the university’s new Pro-Vice Chancellor and Principal (Ag) of the Open Campus Dr Luz Longsworth, said a strong online component, will form a large part of the university’s future. The Open Campus accounts for approximately ten percent of the entire university body. Longsworth, who has over 25 years in both academia and business in Jamaica, Belize and the British Virgin Islands, was appointed as the campus’ principal on May 1 this year.

Facebook is to submit a planning application today for a new data centre in Co Meath, in an investment thought to be worth close to €200 million. If approved, the facility near Clonee will likely result in the creation of hundreds of temporary construction jobs and dozens of permanent operations roles. Facebook considers itself a world leader in energy efficient data centres following construction of an innovative new environmentally friendly facility in Oregon in 2011, and another in Lulea in Sweden, which runs on hydropower. It has shared what it has learned about building energy efficient data facilities with others through what it calls the Open Compute Project. The latest plan is to build the new centre on a site in an industrially zoned part of Clonee.
