LOS ANGELES — On July 30, Mayor Eric Garcetti nominated Interim General Manager Ted Ross to serve as the general manager of the Information Technology Agency and chief information officer for the City of Los Angeles. In this role, Ross will direct the city’s more than 460-person technology agency to harness the power of technology in order to achieve Garcetti’s goals of innovation, transparency, and efficiency across all aspects of city government. Ross, a native of Los Angeles, has worked for the City since 2004, most recently serving as assistant general manager for Information Technology Agency and in information technology leadership roles under City Controllers Laura Chick and Wendy Greuel and at the Los Angeles World Airports.

A few months after civic hackers liberated data from the MTA’s bus tracking app for open use, the transit agency has yet to make the real-time information about where buses are traveling public. But it’s coming, an MTA official said this week. “We are committed from the very beginning to publish this data openly,” MTA Director of Service Development Michael Walk told a meetup of Transportation Techies that was held to coincide with the Association of Commuter Transportation conference being held in Baltimore this week. “The current schedule for releasing the data is by early 2016,” Walk said. He later added that, “It’s definitely coming.” The debate over whether such public data should be opened up first or used for an app was very familiar to the crowd.

Imagine asking your phone to calculate the optimal route for cycling to work while enjoying the best air quality, or calculating whether it’s better to just take the train or bus to reduce pollution. Similar requests might soon be possible. On Tuesday, Google and Aclima, a San Francisco-based startup that makes environmental sensor networks, announced a new partnership to map air quality in cities, building on a one-month pilot program conducted in Denver in which three Google Street Cars collected 150 million data points over 750 hours. Aclima and Google had already collaborated to map the indoor environments in 21 of Google’s offices around the world over the past year.

In early 2015, Jeb Bush published a trove of emails sent to him during his time as governor. All political considerations aside, it provoked significant debate — once people realized the information published included personal information ranging from citizens’ email addresses to the holy grail of government-maintained personal information, social security numbers. This was certainly transparency (in some sense) on Bush’s part, but it also likely compromised the privacy of the people who wrote to him. Many argue that Bush should have adopted various accepted practices that address the potentially negative impacts of “too much transparency,” such as by redacting information traditionally redacted by government FOIA processes, like social security numbers.

GitHub, the hub for open-sourced software and code-sharing, has raised $250 million from investors — among the larger Silicon Valley investments so far this year. The San Francisco-based company confirmed on Wednesday it closed a $250 million Series B, led by premiere VC firm Sequoia Capital, with participation from Andreessen Horowitz, Thrive Capital and Institutional Venture Partners. The round brings GitHub’s total fundraising to $350 million; it hadn’t raised capital since 2012, when it pulled in $100 million from Andreessen Horowitz, the company said. It had bootstrapped itself for four years prior. GitHub declined to comment on its valuation, but the Wall Street Journal pegs it at $2 billion, citing sources familiar with the matter.
