Startups start with talent, and the talent, as we all know, seems to get younger every year. But it wouldn’t happen if children themselves were not introduced to the word of technology and engineering early, and shown that it can be a fun, creative environment. For the last 6 years, a pioneer of this in the UK has been Young Rewired State, a non-profit founded by Emma Mulqueeny, which runs regular year-round events and hackathons for young people, and, annually, the Festival of Code, which attracts an international crowd. The project was spun out of the parent company, Rewired State, which works with public sector and private organisations to bring a hacker/maker to their challenges.

Local hackers Jason Discount, Pat Walsh and Johannes Klupfel have shared a $1000 cash prize for their Dogs Unleashed web application in the Sunshine Coast’s first GovHack event in Peregian Beach on 3-5 July. They received the prize for the most innovative use of data to create a recreational, environmental and/or cultural solution for the Sunshine Coast region. Dogs Unleashed is a responsively designed, location-aware web-app that combines data on parks, beach access points and dog-friendly water fountains to provide local and visiting dog owners with information on where they’re welcome, where they are required to use a leash, and where they can find a dog-friendly drink of water on the Sunshine Coast.

It’s no secret that the growth of publicly available data, or open data, is more prevalent than ever. From government databases, such as those aggregated by Data.gov, to data made available via tools such as Google Places API, the public has access to an overwhelming amount of information. And this doesn’t even account for the large number of unstructured data sets that emerge from social networks, search engines and so on. In an age where 6,000 tweets are posted per second, people are constantly serving up information on themselves. Open data can make life easier in many ways, but it isn’t just about commuting home on today’s traffic-optimized route while stopping by “the right restaurant at the right time” to pick up dinner.

Wikibonは、他のテクノロジー・リサーチサービス、例えばガートナーやInternational Data Corporationと比較すると分かりやすいでしょう。

Afterwards they might relax with a glass of English wine, much improved since growers have been able to identify the most propitious soils in which to plant their vines. This is the kind of scenario that environment secretary Liz Truss hopes will unfold as the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) rolls out its Open Data initiative. It is, she claims, the biggest single government “data give-away”.
