Mike Bracken, the head of the Government Digital Service, and the government’s Chief Data Officer (CDO) has resigned from Whitehall. Bracken, joined the government in July 2011, after a three year stint at Guardian News & Media as its director of digital development, and has masterminded the extension of public services online. He was ranked 19th in Computing’s inaugural IT Leaders 100 list. His impact on those he worked with could be seen on Twitter, with tributes pouring in to him. In a blog post on the GDS website, Bracken explained that at the end of last week, he went to see the man he reports into, John Manzoni, to tell him that he was leaving government.

Blood-doping data from 12,000 tests and 5,000 athletes has been leaked to The Sunday Times and the German broadcaster ARD/WRD by a whistleblower at the International Association of Athletics Federations. According to a report in The Guardian, the data suggested that “a third of medals, including 55 golds, in endurance events at Olympics and world championships between 2001 and 2012 were won by athletes who recorded suspicious tests.” On the one hand, this may show that the Snowden Effect is starting to spread to new fields, as the debate around the value of whistleblowing encourages others to step forward with information of public interest.

The NSW government will set up a dedicated office governing the state’s deployment of data analytics, housed within the Department of Finance, Services and Innovation. Speaking at an AIIA launch at the University of Technology Sydney last night, Innovation Minister Victor Dominello announced the establishment of the Data Analytics Centre (DAC) as a single coordinating entity for whole of government data analytics work. The office will also serve as a single port of call for industry members and non-government organisations interesting in leveraging state data sets for their own purposes.

Boston and San Francisco have both announced expansions to how city government will approach open data. In an announcement made late last week, Boston Mayor Martin Walsh unveiled a new open data policy that will expand the data sets available to the public. Those data sets are still lacking in terms of real value, however. The expansion list includes: In San Francisco, Mayor Edwin Lee released a two-year strategic plan for the city’s open data efforts. The plan includes making data readily available in a timely manner by deploying data automation procedures that will release data sets more frequently. San Francisco is also looking at establishing data standards to create consistency.

Ramakrishna, managing director of Vijayawada-based Efftronics Systems Private Limited, which is currently working on microchip-based smart solutions. Mr. Ramakrishna started his venture as a manufacturer of microprocessor-based LED display systems with visual effects three decades ago. Today, the company’s data loggers monitor signals at over 6,000 railway stations in India.

The Unleashed awards ceremony attracted a big crowd of innovators and entrepreneurs Innovation | Deadlines are said to focus the mind – and they certainly did for the 200 contestants of the Unleashed Awards. Run annually for the past three years by the State Government’s Office of Digital Government, competitors were given 46 hours last month to come up with innovative products – such as phone apps, websites and games – using information “mined” from Government databases. The two winners of the highest accolade, the Premier’s Award, and a raft of category winners were presented with their awards on Friday night with the 47 projects submitted illustrating the broad diversity of ideas and the wealth of data which is now publicly available.

The Chief Scientist of Western Australia, Peter Klinken visited Landgate’s Midland Offices to learn more about the Agency’s Innovation Program and its position as a world leader in the management and use of location information and technology. Landgate claims to be a leader in innovation across the WA Public Sector. General Manager Business Development at Landgate, Jodi Cant spoke about the Innovation Program while Director of WA Land Information System (WALIS), Damian Shepherd shared the potential of open data and outreach programs such as HackED. Professor Klinken said he had been impressed by Landgate’s innovative spirit and the products the Agency had produced.
