Still, when releasing government-held data sets to the public, it’s important to strike a balance between providing open data and protecting citizens’ privacy. A lot of people view maps as art, and now a gallery wants to host an exhibition of maps in its space. The Storefront for Art and Architecture is teaming up with Williamsburg-based mapping startup CartoDB for Insight: A Design and Data Competition. “This open call for submissions brings together data visualization and the built environment in contemporary culture with the goal of inspiring beautiful, creative, and complex works using CartoDB,” the company said in an announcement. Successful projects will be featured at Storefront’s gallery and will win $500. CartoDB is a service that allows you to create tremendously interactive maps based on databases. It’s been used to map flood zones and Uber route patterns, and a lot of other things for which there’s open data.

IBM announced a set of new and enhanced services for its Bluemix Pass, including the addition of analytics capabilities and enhancements to dashDB. IBM launched a new set of services for its Bluemix Platform as a Service (PaaS) that brings enhanced analytics and data warehousing capabilities to the platform. With the new services, developers can add analytics capabilities into cloud-based applications. The new IBM Cloud tools, which include the IBM Streaming Analytics service, enable developers to integrate both data analytics and visualization in their apps. Now in open beta, the new IBM Streaming Analytics service provides the capability to analyze data, scaling to thousands of sources, on the cloud.

A terrific new visualization tool for comet 67/P Churyumov-Gerasimenko demonstrates the value of sharing mission image data with the public. The browser-based tool lets you spin a simulated 3D view of the comet and change lighting conditions to simulate Rosetta’s view, helping users understand the perspective of Rosetta images. It displays mapped geomorphic regions, making the complicated geography of the two-lobed world easier to understand. It shows the locations from which Rosetta snapped photos, linking them to the actual NavCam data. And it began with a 3D model of the comet created not by ESA, but by a space enthusiast, Mattias Malmer.

Code for Africa has received a $4.7 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to fund data journalism schools and projects, according to Journalism.co.uk. Based in Nairobi, Code for Africa is an initiative focused on building civic technology capacity within civil society and the watchdog media with citizen labs operating across the continent. It describes itself as a people-driven movement that aims to empower active citizenry and strengthen civic watchdogs to help government shape and improve its services to citizens. The organization plans to use the money to technology for African journalism, expanding projects in Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and Tanzania focusing on health and development journalism.
