City and county officials got the green light to assemble a team of data experts to make local government more efficient and customer-friendly for residents, track spending and projects and create a regional data center. “Making sure the city and county treat their information as an asset and make that information publicly available,” said Bob Gradeck, project manager for the Western Pennsylvania Regional Data Center. A $1.8 million grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation is funding the first 18 months of the effort, allowing for two major initiatives through county and city governments, the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University starting Oct. 15.

The White House has announced its commitment to emerging tech investment with a new ‘Smart Cities’ internet of things (IoT) initiative, into which it will channel over $160mn (approx. £104mn). The funding will be distributed across 25 projects that will leverage Big Data and analytics to support communities to reduce traffic congestion, fight crime, spur economic growth, manage climate change and improve delivery of local services. More than 20 U.S. cities will be involved in the Smart Cities scheme, as well as industry leaders, universities and federal departments who will support the collaborations with research infrastructure.

Google has today released Street View data from their initiative to include Google Maps imagery from Kenya, including the Samburu National Reserve, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. The project has been undertaken in partnership with Save The Elephants, whose Head of Field Operations David Daballen posts on the issue at the Google Blog. Daballen observes that 100,000 elephants across Africa were killed for ivory in the period 2010-12, but also that numbers are beginning to recover. He also promises that an exploration of the new Street View data could be rewarding: ‘While you make your journey through Street View, you may be surprised what awaits.

Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) slightly down in earthly session as it sees a couple of troubling indicators so as to upcoming U.S. economic data could fall short of consensus expectations. First, the firm’s AlphaWise U.S. retail sales tracker indicates only a 0.2 percent month-over-month (M/M) raise in U.S. retail sales in August, lower than Bloomberg’s consensus estimate of 0.4 percent. Second, the firm’s AlphaWise Real-time Indicator of economic Activity (ARIA) index showed a M/M deceleration of activity in August. Morgan Stanley has been long U.S. Treasuries since early July, and the firm’s Bond Market Indicators (BMIs) have been bullish since June 5. The news led stock of Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) as the shares eased down -0.53% to settle at $33.

Nowadays, a lot of people sport fitness trackers – wearable devices that monitor a person’s steps, heart rate, exercise habits and more. Well, the city of Chicago is hoping to expand on the idea to track the city’s fitness. The project — called The Array of Things (AoT) — will install modular sensor boxes on city street light posts that measure things like climate, air quality and noise. The project is a collaboration between the University of Chicago, the Argonne National Laboratory, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Northern Illinois University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The sensors will collect data on other things that present urban challenges, like foot and vehicle traffic, noise vibrations and weather.

North East business organisations are joining forces in a drive to make the region a global leader in open data. The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) in the North East, Dynamo North East and Sunderland Software City are to host a conference on the subject on September 24. At the event, a campaign will be launched to have the region recognised as a leader in how it uses open data, persuades local authorities to open up more of it and generates business benefits from it. This will be backed up by a year-long programme of activity which will include the creation of a regional open data portal, hackathons focused on using this data to improve the delivery of services and an open hack night which will span the North East.

The United Nations children’s fund (Unicef) is supporting Assam in rolling out a reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health (RMNCH+A) strategy in six high priority districts and in strengthening the cold chain system across the state under a Vaccine Alliance health system strengthening project. Regular monitoring and supervision of health institutions at 805 delivery points and 792 cold chain points is a key intervention under the programmes. Unicef has received funding from Vaccine Alliance for health system strengthening in India for a period of three years from 2014 to 2017. The agency is using digital technology, an Android-based mobile application, to aid in its complex task. “The reason we went to Assam is that it has the highest maternal mortality rates.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan told the annual Techonomy Detroit conference Tuesday that 70% of citizen complaints to city hall now come in through smartphone technology -– a sign that the civic tech movement is taking hold in the Motor City. Civic tech, also known as “smart cities” or “digital cities,” is the nationwide movement to give citizens the data tools needed to improve their lives. In Detroit, those tools can range from a new smartphone app to tell whether city buses are running on time to ways for citizens to access crime data or report illegal dumping via smartphones.
