The Transparency Forum Initiative (TFI), a series of targeted roundtables will launch on Tuesday 17 November, with a press conference. The initiative will focus on highlighting the importance of transparency in all aspects of the political and commercial economy, advocating for regulatory reforms around transparency and encouraging public-private collaboration on new approaches and actions required to embed transparency into the business landscape of Nigeria. The Transparency Forum Initiative consists of committee member firms working in Nigeria – These are emc3, The Guardian Newspaper Nigeria, Control Risks, Africa Practice, Olisa Agbakoba Legal, The Business Year Publication and The Financial Times Group.

Today the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) announced it will enable the academic research community to take advantage of the capabilities of Microsoft’s Project Catapult reconfigurable fabric platform. Project Catapult is expected to improve the speed and efficiency of science and engineering calculations using conventional cluster nodes augmented with field-programmable gate arrays, or FPGAs. TACC will host the first Catapult cluster available outside of Microsoft, where the technology is already accelerating various enterprise, search and machine learning scenarios. This cluster will be a 384-node demonstration system that Microsoft Research is deploying in collaboration with TACC.

Geographic information systems (GIS) have the ability to show many different kinds of data on one map, allowing us to understand patterns and relationships through various applications within society. Visualizing the world through GIS captures, stores, analyzes, and presents information that can be applied to real-world situations. As part of Geography Awareness Week, the Geospatial Centroid at Colorado State University is celebrating GIS Day on Nov. 18. Join members of the geospatial community for a day filled with posters, presentations, and a Humanitarian Mapathon. All events are free and open to the CSU community. Registration is preferred, but guests may come and go as schedules permit.

OpenDataSoft has mapped more than 1,600 open data portals worldwide, in an effort to make clean, usable data easier to find and access. After collecting a comprehensive list of open data portals from around the world through the company’s Open Data Inception project and filling in geographical coordinates for more than 600 of them by hand, the data was cleaned, organized and categorized. The datasets were then uploaded into OpenDataSoft’s cloud-based data solution software, where the team used the platform’s widget library to make the lists accessible through maps and charts, as seen on the OpenDataInception.io site. A search function was also added for easy filtering.

An award-winning technology initiative from the Secretary of State this week launched its third annual app challenge. It’s called Go Code Colorado, and its goal is to bring state government, business and tech communities together to make public data more accessible. That means for all you coders out there, it’s time to start your laptops. “Go Code Colorado began as an innovate experiment in building a community around open data,” said Colorado Secretary of State Wayne Williams in a news release. “As we enter the third year of the challenge, the program has solidified its place, opening up access to public data while building a community of tech and business leaders who are using the data to improve Colorado’s business environment.
