Get out your iPhones, Nashville bus riders. Metro’s real-time bus app is almost here. After talks first began five years ago, the Metro Transit Authority is preparing a “soft launch” in December of new real-time information capability that will enable passengers to track the status of buses on mobile apps as well as digital boards at bus stops. A specific date is not finalized. MTA has branded the new real-time information component the Music City Transit Tracker. The actual cellphone app operated by MTA probably won’t be available until January. However, the availability of real-time data in Nashville is set for next month, allowing passengers to use existing third-party apps used across the country, such as Transit, to now follow the status of buses in Nashville.

Spanish, Mandarin and Polish, as well as English, are the dominant languages spoken by new students in the Wilton Public School District, according to Connecticut Open Data (data.ct.gov). The information in the dataset was reported by LEAs for students and English-learners during the 2014-15 school year. Under Connecticut General Statute 10-17f and No Child Left Behind, local education agencies are required to “ascertain the dominant language of all new K-12 students, which is typically done through a home language survey,” according to Connecticut Open Data.

Action Buses has started publicly releasing its performance data for the first time in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Everything from punctuality to patronage can now be tracked via the new Action Buses open data website. “One of the commitments in the ACT Government’s Public Transport Improvement Plan is a public online dashboard to provide reporting of Action’s performance data,” ACT minister for territory and municipal services Shane Rattenbury says. “The public will be able to see how the performance of the Action network is tracking via our new open data website, which reports against key measures of patronage, network punctuality and service delivery.

Today, The GovLab is pleased to join our partner, the National Information Society Agency (NIA), in announcing the official launch of Open Data 500 Korea, a study of the open data ecosystem in South Korea. Korea is the newest member of the Open Data 500 Global Network, an international network of organizations and government agencies that study the use and impact of open data by businesses and nonprofits. We are delighted to have our colleagues, Professor Kyujin Jung of Tennessee State University and Professor Han Woo Park of YeungNam University, share insights about the open data ecosystem and policymaking in Korea, as well as the  current strategic direction for releasing more government data.

South Africa will next month host its first international science conference, showcasing homegrown research and innovation. The South African Science Forum, which will be held at the CSIR international convention centre in Pretoria, aims to emulate the likes of the Euroscience Open Forum in Europe, the Japanese Science, Technology and Society Forum and the annual meetings of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in the United States. It is free to attend the conference. “We hope that the South African Science Forum will provide Africa with a platform for dynamic and robust debate on the interface between science and society,” science and technology minister Naledi Pandor said on Wednesday.
