Just over a week ago, the United Nations’ Human Development Report marked its 25th anniversary in a ceremony that was held in Ethiopia. Despite Rwanda’s horrific event of 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, it emerged as one of the most progressive countries in the world. According to the report, the leading countries include Singapore, Iran, China, Rwanda and Mozambique, to name but a few. It has been noted that Africa, the Sub-Saharan region in particular, “registered an annual Human Development Index growth of 1.08% on average for the period 1990-2014, positioning the region as the third best performer after South and East Asia and the Pacific.” The Human Development Report has changed the perspective, from the things that a nation produces to the people who actually produce them.

Minecraft enthusiasts can recreate virtual versions of their home towns by combining publicly-available open data with a new tool developed by a web specialist at the University of Southampton. Christopher Gutteridge, from the University’s Web and Data Innovation and Development Team, came up with the idea for the Magic Minecraft Map Maker after spending eight months of his own time painstakingly building a model of his home town Ventnor on the popular computer game. “To create the model I had to painstakingly measure everything from maps and aerial photography and do my best to guess the height of the cliffs and buildings,” said Chris. “I thought, there must be a better way to do this with all the open data that is now available.

The data science industry generated many headlines this year, from the U.S. Department of Commerce hiring its first chief data scientist to the National Science Foundation launching four regional data science brain trusts. But now that 2015 is winding down, it’s time to figure out where this buzzworthy industry is headed. Here are some predictions for next year: Data science will spread to more industries and applications. Eighty-nine percent of corporations believe that not leveraging big data will result in lost market share, a study from Accenture and General Electric found. So as more industries hire data scientists, they’ll be moving away from IT-focused positions and into specialized roles making everyday objects smarter and fine tuning cutting-edge technology.

The European Commission, the operational arm of the European Union, in partnership with Socrata recently launched a massive open data site, accounting for €450 billion across 28 countries and over 500 programs. The new site enables users to visualize spending data by country, fund, and theme, such as education and vocational training. This monumental launch was covered by POLITICO’s Ryan Heath who wrote “until now, finding out just where the money was supposed to be going was a complicated process that only experts could navigate. Now information is collected in one place, searchable and free to use.” The site was developed in less than two months  and works seamlessly on mobile devices. Proposed spending through 2020 is available online.
