This week in health IT interoperability will sharpen focus on the future of information technology (IT) product comparison. During a meeting of the Certified Technology Comparison Task (CTC) on Jan. 15, government officials gave an overview of the evolving “open data” version of the Certified Health IT Product List (CHPL) maintained by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC). The new “Open Data CHPL” will debut in spring 2016, according to Scott Purnell-Saunders, senior advisor in the health IT certification program at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. A proposed release date will be announced in late February.

Developers, government officials, journalists and activists from all over Europe will shine their light on EU decision making and open government as TransparencyCamp Europe comes to Amsterdam. Today, Open State Foundation together with the Dutch Presidency of the Council of the European Union, launch a series of events: an online European-wide open data app competition, hackathons in a number of European capitals and TransparencyCamp Europe, an unconference for open government in Amsterdam. TransparencyCamp Europe will take place on 1 June 2016 in Amsterdam near the area where all official EU presidency meetings are held.

Class starts when 112 state lawmakers convene in Santa Fe to approve a multi-billion dollar spending plan Gov. Susana Martinez can live with before the session ends Feb. 18. That sounds challenging, but the Martinez administration and the Legislative Finance Committee, the Legislature’s budget arm, already have tilled the ground by drafting competing multi-billion-dollar spending plans. Those documents will act as guides for the New Mexico Legislature over the next 30 days as officials work toward a compromise. New Mexico is a rarity. It is one of the few states in which the governor and the Legislature produce budget plans.

Everyone needs a computer geek connection, even scientists who have taught themselves to do amazing things on their own computers. Tyson Swetnam made his geek connection during a conference in Washington, D.C. He could have simply walked across Speedway to the Bio5 offices to meet Nirav Merchant, director of information technology at Arizona Research Labs and a principal investigator for CyVerse, the newly renamed National Science Foundation cyber-infrastructure project headquartered at the University of Arizona. CyVerse began its life as the iPlant Collaborative in 2008 with a $50 million award from the National Science Foundation to create computational infrastructure for the plant sciences.
