RethinkDB is now the number one document database on Github. Ranked 51 on db-engines.com’s database popularity list, RethinkDB has surged from number 82 a year ago. Billed as “the open-source database for the realtime web,” this NoSQL upstart took an unconventional path to prominence, relying on community-based development. As of today, the Mountain View-based company has 17 employees, but they support a community of 100,000+ developers, including 150+ global product collaborators. I recently caught up with RethinkDB co-founder Michael Glukhovsky to get his take on the real-time web, and why he believes RethinkDB has what it takes. Mr Koenders followed up on his remarks made last year when he called for the use of digital technology to ‘open the black box and turn on the light’ in Brussels. In two years, the city of Montreal spent nearly $120,000 on travel for support staff, on top of the $200,000 spent on trips by the mayor and elected councillors. Employees such as the mayor’s chief-of-staff, press attachés and advisors accompanied either the mayor or other city councillors on 64 separate trips in 2014 and 2015. These numbers were disclosed by the official opposition, which has recently criticized the Coderre administration for a lack of transparency. Although the travel costs of elected officials were published by the city, those of support staff were obtained through an Access to Information request. This comes to a total of $320,000 for travel since November 2013. Staffers went as far as Argentina, Italy, South Korea, Japan, China, Haiti, Tunisia, and India.

A trove of data released by Boston police shows black males were the most likely demographic group to be stopped by officers in recent years. Police released hundreds of thousands of Field Interrogation/Observation reports—or FIOs—on the city’s open data site earlier this month. The data, covering 2011 to April 2015, details 149,545 encounters between Boston police and civilians. Officers have to fill out these reports after interrogating, observing, frisking and/or searching a civilian. The reports include the person’s name, nickname or alias, race, age, whether they have a prior record, what they look like, why they were searched, what was searched, where police encountered them and the outcome of the stop.

The first time Lawrence Wood visited Lanzarote the Spanish dictator Francisco Franco was still in power. In 1968, the Spanish island represented a different proposition to investors. “A former employer was renovating an old camel stable in La Asomada,” recalls Wood, who instantly fell in love with the island. His old boss offered to sell him a patch of the land, but it wasn’t until the early 1980s that he took him up on his offer and started building his future home. Wood now considers the move the best decision he ever made, but readily admits that it was a huge financial gamble: “I got lucky.” Others have been less fortunate. The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC)’s Certified Health IT Product List (CHPL) is undergoing major upgrades to facilitate use by providers and researchers. Targeted for a late February release, the new “Open Data CHPL” will allow more fluid access to certification and testing information about electronic health records systems and other health IT products as passed along by ONC’s Authorized Certification Bodies (ACBs). “A lot of the information that was on the previous version of the CHPL was stored in PDF documents or in ways that people couldn’t readily access,” said Scott Purnell-Saunders, senior advisor in the health IT certification program at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
