Another day, another gig for Michael Nutter. The former Philadelphia mayor will serve as a senior fellow for What Works Cities, a Michael Bloomberg-funded, data-driven, philanthropic program aimed at making government more effective and increasing community engagement. Nutter will advise mayors around the country and serve as the program’s national spokesman. It’s the latest in a string of jobs Nutter has taken in the month since he’s left City Hall. He has also will work as a CNN commentator, an urban policy professor at New York’s Columbia University and a U.S. Department of Homeland Security adviser. What Works Cities, launched in April 2015, will help 100 mid-sized cities over three years boost their data use to improve government decision-making.

Packaging recycling data will be published every month, under a new voluntary system coming into effect from Wednesday (10 February). In a move agreed by Defra, the Environment Agency and the Advisory Committee on Packaging (ACP) data from reprocessors and exporters on the volume of recycled packaging material will be published on a monthly, rather than a quarterly basis. If successful, the organisations predict that more frequent reporting could increase transparency surrounding the availability of packaging recovery notes (PRNs) and packaging export recovery notes (PERNs). According to the Environment Agency, more frequent reporting could provide a ‘more complete picture’ of the volume of packaging waste available and ease volatility in PRNs.
