Transport New South Wales has contracted cloud managed services firm Versent Pty Ltd for the creation of a AU$1.8 million online open data hub. Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance said the open data hub will provide a platform for app developers across the world to innovate and deliver new ideas to customers. “Already we’ve seen over 3 million downloads of real time transport apps to date and 90 million requests for timetable data each month,” he said. “We’re taking this even further by building a platform that will make information accessible to anyone who wants it. “To start, we will make real-time transport data open for everyone to access — but with big developments in areas like Opal data — the possibilities are endless.

Much has happened in the world of open access (OA) lately—a splashy potential merger between organizations and the launch of some new tools, resources, and websites that are of interest to the library, publishing, and information communities. On Jan. 27, 2016, the U.S.-based nonprofit organizations DuraSpace and LYRASIS announced that their boards both unanimously approved an “Intent to Merge.” DuraSpace is home to both DSpace and Fedora, two systems that are used by a tremendous percentage of OA repositories around the world, as well as other systems, software, and hosted services, such as VIVO and DuraCloud, that tie into the OA repository infrastructure.

Banking could be made simpler for customers – from comparing mortgages to switching accounts – with ambitious plans for banks and regulators to streamline the sharing of data as soon as the end of the year that would establish the UK as a world leader in financial technology and banking innovation. A group of leading experts appointed by the Treasury to look at how the banking industry can better work with data has called for the creation of an Open Banking Standard that governs how customer and banks’ data can be shared, created and used securely. The creation of an Open API, for instance, could make using price comparison sites easier by giving the site permission to access bank details in a controlled and secure way.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Esri President Jack Dangermond unveiled on Friday LA’s new GeoHub service, a citywide application and open data portal. The GeoHub is a first-of-its-kind technology infrastructure that provides location as a service (LaaS) including real-time data and mapping tools. The below video shows Garcetti explaining the need for a coordinated geospatial infrastructure in Los Angeles and Dangermond explains the specifics of the GeoHub solution, which is supported by open data from over 20 Los Angeles government departments. Former Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter has another job – as a senior fellow for What Works Cities, a Michael Bloomberg-funded, data-driven philanthropic program aimed at making government more effective and increasing community engagement. Nutter will advise mayors around the country and be the program’s national spokesman. What Works Cities did not disclose Nutter’s salary. It’s the latest in a string of jobs Nutter has taken in the month since he’s left City Hall. He also will work as a CNN commentator, an urban policy professor at Columbia University, and an adviser at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

1991, a business incubator that supports tech startups developing software and hardware to process open-source data, held a competition on Feb. 6-7 to find Ukraine’s brightest non-commercial startups. The incubator’s jury picked nine promising startups, which 1991 will go on to help develop. They will either help incorporate them in government agencies, or find investors or donors to develop them further. The competition was held in form of a two-day hackathon – an event in which IT professionals involved in software and hardware development collaborate intensively on new projects within a fixed time frame. The 17 teams that participated in the event were drawn from a total of 130 teams that applied to take part (each team typically consisting of three or four people).

The Open Banking Working Group (OBWG) has today unveiled its report into the future of open data in the banking sector. The report calls on banks to make their data, including information about products and services, available as open data. It says that this will allow comparison tools and similar services to be built, helping customers get a better service and value for money on products. As well as data about products and services, this would include data regarding bank transactions that individuals and businesses will be able to choose to share in a secure fashion. The group also said that there should also be an open API for banking. This will allows services to be built using bank and customer data.

On Tuesday, an industry-led group published a new framework for supporting the use of open APIs in the banking sector. APIs (application programme interfaces) allow software applications to interoperate with each other. The UK Treasury is keen for banks to open up access to the data they hold on customers to other businesses to encourage innovation and boost competition in the sector. It tasked an industry-led Open Banking Working Group (OBWG) with developing a new framework for underpinning an open banking standard to facilitate its plans and has said it will legislate to deliver better access to bank data through APIs “if necessary” if industry does not embrace the changes.
