The connected home is only a small fragment of the Internet of Things (IoT). Perceptive technologists and developers are thinking much bigger — to city-size and even country-size opportunities built around data exchange portals that enable ‘smart,’ digital citizens and enterprises to mix and match connected technologies to complete limitless tasks. It is not so much evolution as revolution, Esmeralda Swartz, VP of Marketing Enterprise and Cloud at Ericsson, told CMSWire recently. In 2011, Berlin was the first city in Germany to start making its data files available to the public. Via the web portal Berlin Open Data access to 847 data files is now free to everybody. Technologiestiftung Berlin (‘Technology Foundation Berlin’) has published a study called “Open Data in der Praxis” (‘Open Data in Practice’). One of the conclusions in the study is that the Senate has made good progress, however, there is a need for the portal to be expanded continuously. By now many authorities voluntarily provide public access to their data – these data are already being used by more than 20 operators for applications, products or services.

Hortonworks today announced a major change to the way it distributes its Hadoop software. Going forward, Hortonworks plans to update “core Hadoop” components like HDFS, MapReduce, and YARN just once a year in accordance with guidance from the Open Data Platform initiative (ODPi), while “extended services” like Spark, Hive, and HBase get updated continually throughout the year. Hortonworks‘ adoption of two separate release schedules for its flagship Hadoop distribution, called the Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP), was made in response to increasingly dense test and release cycles. With more than 20 different Apache Software Foundation (ASF) projects going into HDP, it was becoming difficult for the vendor to ensure that each of the components was fully tested against all the others.

The National Bureau of Statistics, in a bid to promote data transparency and reliability in the country, has unveiled the Enhanced General Data Dissemination System. The EGGDS, which is an initiative of the International Monetary Fund, was launched on Tuesday in Abuja by the Statistician-General of the Federation, Dr. Yemi Kale. Kale said with the launch of the new platform, Nigeria had now become the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to satisfy the EGDDS requirement as well as launch its operation in real time. He stated that the platform would enable the NBS to provide key macroeconomic statistical information covering 15 data categories along with their respective sources.

Open government. Data. Transparency. All are “buzzwords” that have emerged in recent years as taxpayers and beneficiaries alike seek to dissect public-sector spending trends. And, now, all have been legitimized as top priorities for both city and county agencies in 2016 — even ahead of budget and cost-control efforts. In an executive order issued on Friday, Seattle Mayor Ed Murray directed all municipal agencies in the City of Goodwill to follow a new open data policy that makes their data “open by preference.” That, Murray’s directive states, means that city departments will open up their data after screening for privacy and security considerations. “This Executive Order encourages more transparency between the City and outside partners, and ensures we develop tools that provide critical insights for the public on what’s happening in our city,” Murray said on Friday, according to his office’s announcement. The executive order asks all cabinet-level city departments to provide a certain amount of data in a format the public can understand.

Report: DHS to Open Up Geodata on Critical US Facilities The Department of Homeland Security plans to give the public access to an online repository of location data about government facilities, power plants, mining sites, school buildings and other critical infrastructure assets in the U.S., Fedscoop reported Friday. Grayson Ullman writes the DHS will open up 250 geospatial datasets catalogued by the Homeland Infrastructure Foundation-Level Data working group in an effort to help organizations and citizens prepare for attacks. The geodata will be available for download via the HIFLD Open Data website, Ullman reports.

The mapping, obviously, will involve open data, and hackers are invited to share ideas and feedback with each other. Perhaps you can draw inspiration from Ben Trigg’s interactive crime map of Wilmington. Perhaps you don’t know how to code but want to inform which maps gets made. Stop by.
