The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) have unveiled the Enhanced General Data Dissemination System (e-GDDS) aimed at attracting more Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs) into Nigeria. The Statistician-General of Federation, Dr. Yemi Kale, who unveiled the electronic platform on Tuesday in Abuja, said the e-GDDS initiative followed the launch in the 1990s, the data standards initiatives by the IMF, with the aim of enhancing member countries’ data transparency and promoting development of sound statistical systems.

A group of researchers are today being urged to share their data for a landmark trial that raised safety concerns about the use of starch solutions. In a special report published today, The BMJ’s Associate Editor Peter Doshi sets out the facts of the case and asks, is it right for academics to withhold data and prevent independent scrutiny of their results? The CHEST trial raised safety concerns about the use of hydroxyethyl starch (HES) to replace lost blood volume in critically ill patients. It was published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) in 2012 and led European and American regulators to suspend use of HES across much of the world.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — In a presentation held March 1 during California Data Demo Day, which showcases state data transparency projects, California officials underscored a swath of technical and bureaucratic roadblocks still hindering digital efforts. The commentary pointed to a litany of struggles as state legislators and administrators recalled past pursuits with open data. The speakers surfaced recurring issues in funding, infrastructure and culture change while calling for continued vigilance in modernizing state services. Funding constraints have always impacted state IT initiatives, but Jan Ross, deputy treasurer for technology and innovation, said the limitations only escalate when petitioning legislators to fund digital transparency.
