The Patient Safety Movement Foundation was established to encourage entrepreneurs to develop new uses of health data to improve patient safety and reduce preventable deaths. Joe Kiani, the foundation founder said in a statement, “With data sharing, we will hopefully also unlock the mysteries behind cancer and heart disease and help identify therapies that are most likely to work.” Some of the companies that have signed the pledge include Oracle, GE Healthcare, Philips Healthcare, and IBM Watson Health.

New open data portals are coming online in Little Rock, Arkansas as a result of the city’s inclusion in the Bloomberg Philanthropies What Works Cities initiative. The European Commission has embarked on an ambitious journey to create a seamless 28-country market for digital goods and services in Europe. Last week the Data Coalition held our second annual California Data Demo Day in Sacramento. Over 100 open data supporters joined us for two panel discussions and a roomful of tech demos. Several California agencies are making steady, step-by-step progress toward open data. Agencies like the Department of Justice and the State Treasurer’s office have started to adopt consistent standards to make their data searchable, then publishing data for all to scrutinize and use. And many California municipalities are going further, publishing comprehensive open data sets on topics like spending and public safety.
