California’s Government Operations Agency (GovOPs) announced Monday that it has launched the second phase of its open data portal project centralizing open data in the state of California. New data sets from the Department of Transportation, State Water Resources Control Board and Department of Finance are now available on https://greengov.data.ca.gov/, the agency said. On Friday the State Water Board hosted a data fair and kicked off its inaugural Water Dive. Data-centered events focused on fostering transparency and collaboration within the Water Boards, state and local agencies, and the public. GovOps launched the open data portal with the CA GreenGov Challenge code-a-thon in October 2015.

Assembly Bill 2524 will convert Crime in California and other annual reports published by the California Department of Justice into digital data sets that will be published on the Attorney General’s OpenJustice Web portal. These reports provide statistical summaries including numbers of arrests, complaints against peace officers, hate crime offenses, and law enforcement officers killed or assaulted. The OpenJustice Web portal will transform the way this information is presented to the public with interactive, accessible visualization tools, while making raw data available for public interest researchers. “Right now we are sitting on mountains of valuable criminal justice data that local law enforcement work hard to provide in the public interest.

Google/Alphabet (GOOG , GOOGL ) will open data centers in Oregon and Japan in the coming months to support its cloud infrastructure and app (IaaS/PaaS) platform, and plans to open another 10 over the next 12-18 months. The facilities will be a mixture of Google-built data centers and ones leased from third parties. The openings will increase the number of cloud “regions” supported by Google by 5x to 15 – Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) currently has 12, with plans to open another 5 – and are part of a major expansion push led by new cloud chief Diane Greene. Google’s efforts also include upping its enterprise sales and marketing spend – both to gain IaaS/PaaS share, and to sell Microsoft Office clients on Google Apps.

Attorney General Kamala D. Harris and Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin, D-Thousand Oaks, announced a piece of legislation Tuesday to modernize California’s collection and publication of criminal justice data. The OpenJustice Data Act builds on Harris’s historic open data initiative, OpenJustice, to improve accountability and transparency in California’s criminal justice system. “Data and technology have the power to dramatically increase transparency and accountability in our criminal justice system,” said Harris. “This legislation will bring criminal justice data reporting into the 21st Century. I thank Assemblymember Irwin for standing with me to support the adoption of technology by law enforcement.

Now imagine this: you can report their unsanitary state by pressing a button on a kiosk outside the restrooms, which instantly sends an e-mail to the appropriate park authorities with your feedback. Oh, and a tree is down, blocking one of the main hiking trails? You can report that, too. Graffiti? Ditto. Just having a fantastic day at the park? The internet-enabled park feedback kiosks, dreamed up by a team of developers this weekend, would be let you say nice things, too. The idea was conceived in just 24 hours by a team competing at a hackathon last weekend funded by AT&T in partnership with Seattle Parks and Recreation and the Seattle Department of Information Technology.

– Today’s federal budget commits $200 million over five years for better oceans and freshwater management, including increased investments in science and transparency. Oceana Canada applauds this much-needed move, and has been calling for increased transparency in decision-making on the state of our ocean resources. The test now is for this funding to result in tangible improvements to the health of our oceans. Less than 50 per cent of Canada’s fish populations are considered healthy; well below the levels of many other developed countries. In Canada, many species, such as cod and groundfish, still have not recovered after serious overfishing in the 1980s and 1990s.
