The CrimeReports crime-mapping web service from Motorola has been revamped to include chart, graph and trend tools from Socrata, the digital government service provider. Launched more than 10 years ago, CrimeReports gives law enforcement agencies the ability to publish crime data from record management or computer-aided dispatch systems to an online map. The partnership with Socrata expands the public-facing data to include analysis that helps citizens understand crime and public safety in their community. Users can filter data by crime type, neighborhood or law enforcement patrol area and date range.

The Commerce Department’s Commerce Data Service only launched in November, but the small office has plans to grow to more than 100 people and knock out more than a dozen projects this summer. “How many people actually like interacting with government websites?” Dr. Tyrone Grandison, Commerce’s deputy chief data officer and CDS head, asked the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Information Security and Privacy Advisory Board on March 23. “That’s the problem,” he said when no hands went up. CDS is aiming to improve digital offerings throughout Commerce via a combination of consulting, product development and education. All of CDS’ core team members, Grandison said, came from 18F, bringing with them an ethos of forceful outreach.

The City of Franklin has unveiled a new website that number crunchers will surely love. In an effort to increase transparency, the city recently launched Franklin Forward, an open data website that gives residents access to a variety of information, including city finances. Franklin Forward also allows users to explore different topics such as quality of life, sustainable growth and city safety. City staff said the easy-to-use navigation and layout will help provide context for residents using the site. “What makes this site so powerful is any citizen at any time can explore the city’s data,” said Michael Walters Young, budget and analytics manager. The interactive layout of the site allows users to select data from six categories, which provide facts and figures on various topics.

On March 7, the Obama administration introduced the Opportunity Project, a new open data portal that combines data from a variety of federal agencies, not-for-profit organizations, companies, and online tools to give communities insights into jobs, transportation, housing, and school districts. “Officials are also using the White House announcement event as a call to action for communities to build upon the tools released [March 7]. All of the data sets and services have been posted on open source code management platform GitHub,” FedScoop notes. Building on the Open Access Button, the Open Data Button (initially only for Chrome) helps “people find, release, and share the data behind papers. … When you need the data supporting a paper (even if it’s behind a paywall), push the Button.

Editor’s note: This 30-day blog focused on Illinois’ IT modernization was originally published on LinkedIn, and is republished here with permission. The state of Illinois collects an enormous amount of data from millions of clients who interact with state government on a daily basis. The state delivers these services across a wide range of agencies, with each agency storing and managing data in its own systems, which many times makes sharing data across agencies impossible.  This is the result of a “technology debt” that has been building up for decades.  A lack of interoperability among systems leads to frustration for consumers and providers of state services.  And until recently the state has lacked a method for effectively managing and analyzing this data.

Very few enterprises have begun to recognise the benefits of consuming open data; still fewer see a reason to make their own data freely available. While the advantages of open data may be clear in the public sector, the risks still outweigh the advantages in the private sector. [See also: What every UK CIO should do about Open Data] Governments in developed countries have been working hard to make public data freely available for consumption by the private sector. The United States, the UK, and Germany have led the pack so far. But France is coming on strong after having appointed a national chief data officer 18 months ago.

Google’s new cloud chief Diane Greene had unsettling news for employees at an internal sales meeting this month in Las Vegas: They weren’t taking corporate customers seriously enough and needed to sell harder, be hungrier and less complacent. That was an unusual message at Google, which typically venerates technology over sales and marketing. But it was a necessary one. Google is third in cloud computing, an increasingly popular way for companies to run their IT operations. That’s a $20 billion-a-year business forecast to grow 35 percent over the next year, according to Gartner Inc. To climb this ranking, the Alphabet Inc. subsidiary will massively expand its network of data centers, a move that fits with Google’s tendency to rely on technological solutions to challenges.

UK plays host to less than 5 percent of world’s major cloud data centres, but expansions from AWS, Google, and Microsoft will boost the region in 2016 The UK hosts less than five percent of the world’s major cloud and Internet data centres, falling behind countries such as Australia, Japan, and China as use of cloud computing continues to grow in 2016. The United States takes the overall majority share of cloud locations, however, with almost half of all major Internet data centres situated in the country, according to findings from analyst house Synergy Research Group. But the UK could get a significant boost this year, as the world’s three largest cloud providers prepare to open data centres in the region.

In a study appearing in the March 22/29 issue of JAMA, Ann Marie Navar, M.D., Ph.D., of Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C., and colleagues examined how shared clinical trial data are being used. Concerns over bias in clinical trial reporting have stimulated calls for more open data sharing. In response, multiple pharmaceutical companies have created mechanisms for investigators to access patient-level clinical trials data. The researchers evaluated how many clinical trials were publicly available to investigators through 3 open access platforms, and found that a total of 3,255 clinical trials were available in the platforms. The median number of trials requested by each proposal was 2. Only 505 unique trials (15.5 percent of available trials) had ever been requested.
