We’re excited to announce that the Open Data Charter has welcomed two new cities – expanding the Charter’s strong community in Latin America. Quito, Ecuador, and San Isidro, Peru, are the first cities in their respective countries to adopt the Charter and the Lead Stewards look forward to welcoming them. Quito Mayor Mauricio Rodas Espinel remarked that the world is “witnessing the growth of a global movement facilitated by technology and social media and fueled by information[…]Open data sits at the heart of this global movement.” We could not agree more and look forward to being part of Quito’s mission to integrate open data into its everyday operations.

California-based OpenGov has acquired Ontodia, a provider of open data solutions based on CKAN. OpenGov is the brainchild of Palantir’s Joe Lonsdale, and most recently closed a $25 million funding round in October of last year. Ontodia’s two co-founders Joel Natividad and Sami Baig will be staying on and joining OpenGov, working in the New York office. The deal marks OpenGov’s first acquisition since its launch. With the new features from incorporating Ontodia, OpenGov users will now be able to augment their OpenGov financial and performance data with on-premise or cloud-hosted Open Data libraries include elements of both an open-source cloud platform and a managed services offering.

NASA has chosen Pasadena to be the global main stage location from over 175 participating cities in this year’s annual NASA Space Apps Challenge, an event that brings together talented participants from around the world to develop innovative solutions to challenges faced here on earth and in space. “We’re traveling at light speed with this program. It’s been just one year since Pasadena’s inaugural participation in this prestigious event and we’ve now emerged as the global main stage,” said Joe Brisbois, organizer of the Space Apps Challenge in Pasadena. “It is truly an honor that NASA picked Pasadena, but one that is well deserved given the city’s long and storied contributions to space exploration and to pioneering innovations in technology, art, engineering, science and design.

OpenGov has acquired Ontodia in a move that expands its open data and performance management solutions platform. Ontodia founders Joel Natividad and Sami Baig will join OpenGov after the acquisition is complete. The acquisition adds Ontodia’s open data, performance management and data analytics to OpenGov’s financial intelligence and transparency solution. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Pivotal Software has pulled the plug on its Hadoop distribution and will resell Hortonworks’ version — a decision that further moves the Hadoop market back to where it began, with three independent vendors as the primary suppliers of the open source distributed processing framework. In addition to Hortonworks and rivals Cloudera and MapR Technologies, IBM and Amazon Web Services (AWS) continue to offer Hadoop distributions. Like Pivotal, though, IBM last year aligned itself with Hortonworks as part of the Open Data Platform initiative, a group now known simply as ODPi that is working to create a common set of core specifications for Hadoop platforms.

The report “As wages rise, China’s robot army set to swell” (April 11), regarding the rise in the use of industrial robots, has a significant bearing on Singapore’s manufacturing viability in the coming years. It requires Singapore to take a closer look at what improved automation and productivity will mean when pitted against Asian giants such as China. As the rest of Asia tries to move away from manual labour, which entails production variability and ever-growing costs, industrial robotics will become a standard and a must. Though not all manual labour can be removed, more and more facilities will lean towards a mix of automation and manual operation.

Like many agencies, the Federal Aviation Administration wants to take advantage of private sector innovation to spur development of new applications and services — in this case, ones that can ultimately advance general aviation. The External Data Access initiative, announced by FAA Deputy Administrator Mike Whitaker April 8, seeks to improve the public’s access to certified FAA data on airports, navigation aids, obstacles, holding patterns, approaches and temporary flight restrictions. “[O]ur goal is to help industry be in a position to create innovative products and technologies that improve safety and efficiency,” Whitaker said to a group of general aviation manufacturers in Lakeland, Fla., when he introduced the program.
