Keep in touch Stay up-to-date with what we’re doing This international competition is collaboration between Wellcome and the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), with support from Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Each of the shortlisted teams will now get $80,000 to develop their prototypes over the next seven months. The six projects will then go head to head in a public vote at the end of the year, when you can help to decide the final winner who will receive $230,000 to take forward their innovation. The 7th Health Datapalooza Conference in Washington, D.C., opened with several funding opportunity announcements designed to help overcome hurdles in data access and sharing. Karen DeSalvo, M.D., the national coordinator for health IT, announced two new funding opportunities totaling $1.5 million to advance common standards: the High Impact Pilots (HIP) and the Standards Exploration Awards (SEA). The HIP program fits within the ONC Tech Lab’s focus on pilots for standards and technology. Awardees will be able to test solutions, evaluate scalability, and identify the potential impacts of their selected standards and technology solutions.

Senior Lecturer Aris Alissandrakis and Research Assistant Nico Reski, both at the Department of Media Technology, have presented their ongoing research efforts within Virtual and Augmented Reality, as well as a new project about visualizing public opinion. The web features an ever-increasing amount of data that can be freely used, modified and shared. But how can we make that data visible and valuable? On May 3, 2016, Senior Lecturer Aris Alissandrakis and Research Assistant Nico Reski, both at the Department of Media Technology at Linnaeus University, presented their research within Virtual and Augmented Reality at a meeting arranged by Dataföreningen in the city of Malmö.

JERSEY CITY — Motorists this afternoon had no nice words to describe traffic in Jersey City. “It took us an hour to get from Bayonne to here,” said one man stuck in a line of cars at Baldwin and Pavonia avenues at about 3 p.m. “It’s lousy.” El Toure, 18, who attends Dickinson High School, said it takes 30 minutes in the morning rush to drive the half-mile from Newark Avenue and Kennedy Boulevard to the school. Things may start looking up for motorists looking for the best routes around traffic. Jersey City is teaming up with Google to share data with the tech giant’s Waze app, becoming the first city in the New York City metropolitan area to agree to swap information about traffic, road closures and potholes with the navigation app’s makers.

In a moving speech to the Health Datapalooza conference in Washington, D.C., Vice President Joe Biden tied the health data liberation movement to both the cancer moonshot effort he is charged with leading as well as his own son’s battle with cancer. “Today most cancer centers don’t have an easy way or motivation to share data,” he said. “We have to change this.” Biden welled up when speaking about his son, Beau Biden, who died in 2015 from brain cancer. He spoke passionately about both the current roadblocks to sharing data and the great potential to have significant breakthroughs in cancer research in the next few years.
