BENGALURU: Co-founder of DataMeet (Community of Data Science and Open Data enthusiasts) Thejesh GN conducted a workshop with a bunch of children and taught them to build sensors for the environment on Sunday afternoon in Bengaluru.”Weather change is just a feeling for most children but they will now be able to measure the temperature and humidity at any given time at their homes,” said Thejesh.The four-hour workshop was a part of the Open Data Camp Meet 2016 and was attended by students. “I have never done anything like this before and it was so interesting that I will definitely go home and re-build the sensor just the way it was taught,” said Vaishnavi Arun, a second year student of MCC.The children built sensors using LED, micro-controller and bread board.

When Ben Wellington received a few tickets for parking at these ramps, he knew that he was in the right. Still, it made the Pratt Institute data scientist wonder how many vehicle owners were unaware of the laws, and how many had gone ahead and paid the fines for it over the years. Wellington used the city’s open data portal to uncover some data about similar parking tickets. “What I found,” he said, as reported by Pix11, “was that the top spots that were getting pedestrian ramp tickets were actually legal parking spots.

A New York blogger has used open data to uncover hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of incorrect parking fines handed out by the city’s police. An analytics project by open data advocate Ben Wellington has prompted a frank admission from the NYPD that its patrol officers were never updated on changes to the city’s parking rules, and a promise to make sure they are properly trained on the reforms. In 2009, New York City decided to make it legal to park in front of a pedestrian ramp built into the side of a footpath, as long as it doesn’t lead onto a pedestrian crossing. But Wellington caught wind that these spots were still being fined when his own car was incorrectly ticketed in Brooklyn.

Gaborone — The envisaged first ever International Conference on the Internet, Cyber Security and Information Systems (ICICIS) billed for next week at GICC in Gaborone is a major step in addressing the threat posed by use of the internet in the African continent. Addressing a preparatory press conference on May 11 for this forum, which is hosted by the University of Botswana (UB) in conjunction with the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in South Africa, UB’s Dr Tshiamo Motshegwa from the Department of Computer Sciences said the conference will deliberate on cyber security issues which has of late become critical for the safety of internet users.

Analysis The government is poised to legislate on how it intends to use your data for public services – but its woefully worded “data sharing” consultation suggests it hasn’t learnt much from the ongoing controversies of Care.data. Whitehall is due to publish a response to the consultation, set out in Better Use of Data – Consultation Paper, which recently closed following a two-year series of “open policy” meetings. That will feed into the long-rumoured Digital Economy Bill and is expected to get a mention in the Queen’s Speech next week. It will create the governance framework for how mandarins share our information between government departments and with third parties, as well as setting out the security principles for using personal information. London is greatly superior to other large cities of the world, when it comes to data sharing and how that data can help create an economically and environmentally sustainable urban environment, according to new research. The results have been published by The Future Spaces Foundation, in the Transport Systems Scorecard. The Scorecard says London’s free data sharing policy has helped developers create navigation apps and programs. So, for example, Transport for London estimates that the yearly value of time saved by apps created thanks to the data it shared, could amount to £116 million.

The City of Los Angeles–which has been building very close ties to the technology world since the election of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti–said today that it has tied into the ultra-fast, 100Gbps research and education network run by CENIC, which will give researchers, educators, and students high speed access to the city’s databases and computers. The two sai the connection provides a network 1000 times faster than was available previously to access that city data. CENIC (Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California) runs the California Research and Education Network (CalREN), which connects such institutions as Caltech, UCLA, USC, Cal State LA, and the Los Angeles Community Colleges, as well as K-20 students and educators.

“Comment is free, but facts are sacred”. So wrote CP Scott in his ‘A Hundred Years’ essay in 1921 to celebrate the centenary of The Guardian and his 50th anniversary as editor there. Some hundred years later, facts are still sacred and open data has enriched those facts. Where journalism is telling a story, open data gives stories new perspectives, more credibility, and easier means to explain complex topics to the audience. Journalists are increasing the value of data for the public by sifting through datasets. Adding visualisations and infographics further enriches journalists’ stories, and shapes new angles to narrate and discuss topics. In a way, data journalists are becoming data providers to the audience and are on the front line making data into knowledge.
