Law enforcement officers — and the agencies for which they work — have historically been a pretty insular group. Not too many years ago, the most common answer to any question from the news media or the public about an incident would be something like “We have no comment at this time.” Responses such as those are untenable today. The news media, the public, and many politicians are placing increasing pressure on police departments to account for activities such as how they are operating, where they are operating, and who they are arresting. Sadly, this pressure has led to a strain between police officers and the communities they serve at a time when a single, isolated incident can lead to catastrophic damage in police-community relations.

PoliceOne’s Editor in Chief Doug Wyllie recently spoke with Lieutenant John Moses of John’s Creek Police Department in Georgia about a new tool being used by the department, dubbed “PoliceView,” giving citizens greater visibility into the department’s efforts. PoliceView, utilizes SunGard Public Sector’s Public Connect solution, powered by Socrata’s open data, to improve both time and cost efficiency for officers in the department, while improving communication between the department and the community it serves. “The best aspect of PoliceView is that it is proactive on the part of the police department — citizens can easily find the data they need — it is all available in a publicly digestible format,” said Lieutenant Moses.

Technology experts and people interested in collecting data are teaming up to make research more accessible online by taking part in the SHARE project. People from all across the country gathered at the Omni Hotel in downtown Charlottesville Monday to take part in the SHARE hackathon. SHARE stands for Shared Access Research Ecosystem. People at the hackathon are working on creating a search engine for those interested in doing scientific research. They are collecting data across the internet that relates to any scientific work, whether it’s a publication or drafts of scientific papers not yet published. They are then taking that data and putting it into one single database for people to use and conduct their own research.

On the fun scale, looking for a job is right up there with trips to the dentist and standing in line at the DMV — but Virginia is making the process easier. On July 7, Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced a new initiative called Open Data, Open Jobs that uses the magic of data science and public-sector elbow grease to connect job seekers and employers. The initiative is centered around a single data set, now housed at data.virginia.gov, composed of postings taken from multiple job boards. New Mexico is under consideration by social media giant Facebook as a location for its new data center, according to filings with state regulators at the Public Regulation Commission Friday. The documents filed by the Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) — also the state’s largest electric provider — state that PNM was approached by Facebook about a proposed data center in the state. Utah is the other state in contention for the center. Facebook “is also considering locating its new facility in another state and has informed PNM that the state which is best able to meet its requirement will be the state chosen by the Customer for building its new data center,” Thomas J.

A harsher Freedom of Information (FOI) bill has been filed in the House of Representatives. The measure, House Bill 161, was filed by Quezon City Rep. Jose Christopher “Kit” Belmonte. It seeks six months imprisonment for government officials who refuse to open government records to the public. The bill mandates government agencies and public officials to disclose all information pertaining to official acts, transactions or decisions, as well as government research data used as a basis for policy development. During the 16th Congress, the FOI bill was approved on the committee level in November 2014 but it was never sponsored for plenary debates.

Data geeks are stoked. That’s because the city of San Diego just launched its new open data portal. The site provides access to 44 different data sets that people can play with, including information about solar panel permits, street sweeping schedules, water-quality testing results, parking meter stats and more. “And this is just the beginning,” said Almis Udrys, the director of performance and analytics for the city of San Diego. Udrys joined hosts Scott Lewis and Andrew Keatts this week to talk about the new portal and the opportunities it affords residents, software developers who might use the data to create useful apps and city staff, which now has a more efficient way to access information and put it to use.
