Datopolis is a board game by Ellen Broad and Jeni Tennison from the Open Data Institute, and as you might expect, it promotes the use of open data. Datopolis is a board game about building things — services, websites, devices, apps and research — using closed and open data. It’s set in a town called Sheridan, which is gradually declining as shops close, teachers quit, hedgehogs go extinct and pollution rises. The tools that players build contribute to making Sheridan a healthier, wealthier, happier place to live. For a limited time, you can buy the game on Game Crafter. You can also download the components from GitHub and print them yourself, because it’s all openly licensed, fittingly.

The impact of the Internet of Things on Smart Cities could reach $1.6 trillion by 2025, according to experts set to speak at the Gitex Technology Week, the region’s largest annual IT trade fair, in Dubai, UAE. The opportunities include $800 billion in transportation and $700 billion in healthcare, they added, citing a recent report by the research firm McKinsey Global Institute. The 36th edition of Gitex Technology Week runs from October 16 to 20 at Dubai World Trade Centre. Since its launch in 2014, with a mandate to make Dubai the happiest city on earth, enabled by smart technology, Smart Dubai has completed the first phase of its city transformation.

Philadelphia residents and researchers interested in analyzing local public health data can now do so at the district level after the city released a new digital tool providing a breadth of information on current demographic trends. The web-based Community Health Explorer app, jointly developed by the Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDPH) and the Office of Open Data and Digital Transformation, takes the city’s public health survey a step further from other prominent annual studies that have examined national health data by county, grouping Philadelphia datasets into a single entity. “This tool will allow anyone to see and better understand the health problems we face as a city,” said Philadelphia Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley.

Photo courtesy of Student Conservation Association High school students spent the summer mapping and improving trails and removing invasive species from parks. For six years now, youth in San Mateo County have worked to carve out trails and remove invasive species over hundreds of acres of county parkland. It’s a partnership between the Student Conservation Association and the parks department that will also lead to the creation of interactive maps put together by local high school students. The summer session ended last week with some crews working on trail maintenance, removing invasive plants and park maintenance while others used iPads and geographic information system (GIS) technology to inventory natural resources within the parks.

We are entering a new era of information openness and transparency.  Open data has the potential to spur economic innovation and social transformation.   Focusing just on economic impacts, in 2013, for example, the consulting firm McKinsey estimated the possible global value of open data to be over $3 trillion per year.  A study commissioned by Omidyar Network has likewise calculated that open data could result in an extra $13 trillion over five years in the output of G20 nations. These impacts illustrate why it is important that we encourage people of every age to invest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education.

Kitchens, dining areas, sheds and even under-stairs cupboards are converted to serve as bedrooms. Migrants, students, and families are forced into cramped living conditions by the immense pressures on housing in growing cities. Homes are illegally subdivided into increasingly tiny units to accommodate booming populations; often this involves haphazard electricity and plumbing arrangements, raising serious safety concerns. The grave consequences of overcrowding need to be urgently addressed by governments. Cities must provide affordable, quality and safe housing.

Science reports researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine hope they will. Researchers are developing new therapies for humans by testing them in sick dogs and cats, rather than in mice or lab rats. One study hoping to provide a breakthrough in cancer currently involves 13 canines. The number of these trials is currently booming, with hundreds conducted in just the past decade. The rationale is that pets are a better model for human illnesses than rodents.
