Cities can become much more friendly and better places when the private sector, government and active citizens come together to address and face new challenges. One of the means to do so is by joining forces around Open Data to explore what is possible. With this idea in mind, the Otakar Motejl Fund together with Node5, reSITE and StartupYard are organising a new edition of the hackathon Prague Hacks. During this event, software developers, idea makers, data analysts and urban planners come together to explore Prague’s Open Data and how it can provide tools to address new challenges. The goal of this hackathon is the development of a City Dashboard, inspired by what has been made in Leeds.

Founder and CEO of APPCityLife, Lisa Abeyta, was ahead of the game in 2009 when she launched the company. “I saw that access to interactions for mobile users for small business was unobtainable because it was too expensive. I created a platform for city guides that would not only give users access to hours of urgent care, but also what was going on Friday night, and more,” said Lisa. That initiative gained nationwide attention for APPCityLife. They were invited to MobileBeat in San Francisco and named one of the top ten startups. There was revenue, but Lisa added: The City of the Albuquerque was one of the first cities to rollout open data. It was the perfect opportunity for AppCityLife to use their platform.

– The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC®) has released the results of the CityGML Quality Interoperability Experiment (QIE) as a public Engineering Report. Carried out as a joint activity between the OGC, SIG3D and EuroSDR, the CityGML QIE,  defined data quality requirements for a general CityGML data specification, created recommended implementation guidance for CityGML encoded 3D data, and provided a suite of tools to carry out quality assurance on CityGML data. The CityGML QIE improves the interoperability of CityGML data by removing some ambiguities from the current standard, and formally defining data quality requirements for a general CityGML data standard.

U.S. cities spend huge sums on public contracting each year. In just two cities, New York and Los Angeles, contract spending was almost $25 billion in 2015 alone. Not all this money is spent well or even properly. A 2015 State Integrity Investigation found corruption red flags across the U.S. In Chicago, the head of the public schools services was involved in kickbacks on training contracts, diverting $23 million from money for some of the city’s poorest residents It’s not only the risk of corruption, there is also the challenge of ensuring quality and value for tax dollars. In 2015, Washington, D.C., Attorney General Karl Racine announced that the two companies contracted to provide meals in public schools would pay the city a $19.

Hailed last year as an open data ‘champion’ by former Cabinet Office Minister Francis Maude, Cambridgeshire County Council’s Cambridgeshire Insight is a shared research knowledge base that allows a network of over 20 public and third sector partners to publish data useful for both each other and the public. What does being an open data local government champion look like on the ground? Given that this is an initiative that’s now been active for over two years, it seems timely to go and ask. The short answer, according to Michael Soper, who heads up all research work by the county council, is rather simple. “In the past, even two years back, people like me sat in the middle of the county council and worked with data in a rather privileged way,” he says.

The benefits that come from data analytics are many — it’s helped reduce inmate populations, improve reliability of emergency medical services and reduce traffic fatalities, to name just a few. Though some government agencies are slow to embrace it due to limited capital or sheer intimidation in the face of disparate systems and fragmented technologies, others have taken hold of the proverbial horns and started the process of improving their daily operations by way of the data.
