The Data Foundation, the sister organization of the Data Coalition that launched this winter, is teaming up with the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the Sunlight Foundation to hold a “California Database Hunt.” The goal? California’s local government agencies are now (as of July 1, 2016) required to publish a list of all “enterprise systems” they use to store data and information on the public. According to event organizers, “these catalogs not only name the databases, but the type of data they collect and store, the name of the software used and the vendor.” Understandably, this new regulation is an incredible opportunity for open data enthusiasts of all stripes but, as organizers of the hunt put it, “first we need to index all these catalogs.

Leusner was invited to the White House to participate in a 21st Century Police Briefing July 6. The event provided an overview of recommendations developed by a presidential Task Force on 21st Century Policing. The objective of the follow-on discussion was an exchange of ideas on maintaining public safety while also increasing confidence in the justice system. Leusner returned from Washington wanting to implement one of the initiatives that grew out of the task force recommendation. In May 2015 the White House launched the Police Data Initiative which seeks to improve the relationship between citizens and police through increased transparency gained through shared data. At present, 53 jurisdictions across the country have committed to the initiative.

The DVRPC Freight Rail Line data layer was developed to identify key ownership and operation details for freight rail lines in the Delaware Valley. This data set was developed internally using various rail mapping and track chart sources. The polyline network represents rights-of-way rather than track and is segmented based on subdivision or track name as well as key profile details. The line set has been developed with input from various Class I and short-line railroads in the region.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is historically rooted in this concept and the organization’s purpose is easily understood through examination of the Great Baltimore Fire of 1904. On Feb. 7 and 8, 1904, Baltimore burned. The fire caused the modern-day equivalent of $3.84 billion in damage, left 35,000 people unemployed and somehow, killed no one.

Analysis of crime data posted by the Edmonton Police Service on its new open-data dashboard website shows crime rising steadily across the board the past five years. Property crime, in particular, is a trouble spot, with all four major categories projected to rise by more than 25 per cent compared to numbers posted in 2011. A tally of the four property crime indicators — break and enter, theft from vehicle, theft of vehicle and theft over $5,000 — is projected to be up 36 per cent from 2011. While violent crime has risen steadily the past five years, the city is on pace for a small decline in 2016 compared to last year.

The Edmonton Police Service has opened its books to the public. Police launched an online dashboard through the City of Edmonton’s open data website Thursday that provides detailed crime statistics and police performance data in an interactive way that has not been done by any other police service in Canada. “It’s all about transparency and accountability. I think people want to know more about what their government is doing for them,” said Stephane Contre, the city’s chief analytics officer. “I think this is a way to show them we’re accountable – we’re showing them, without restriction, what they can do. They are free to take that information themselves and do their own analysis.

The New South Wales government will be launching a beta version of a new smartphone app next week, which will provide citizens with real-time updates on petrol prices across the state. Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation Victor Dominello said his latest data-driven initiative, Fuel Check, is not only the first of its kind in the country, but the first of its kind in the world. “It’s a great example of using open data to empower — if it’s real-time, then we can make informed decisions right now,” he said.

The federal government will be hosting public-private roundtable sessions next month focused on encouraging local councils to improve its suburbs and cities through the use of technology. At a cost of AU$50 million, the Smart Cities and Suburbs Program aims to support councils across Australia to fast-track open data and innovative technology solutions to fix local problems. Speaking at a Future Cities Summit in Brisbane on Thursday, Assistant Minister for Cities Angus Taylor said the goal was to encourage local government to partner with tech experts to make cities and suburbs more liveable, sustainable, and productive. “The Smart Cities and Suburbs Program is to support clever technology ideas to fix difficult or long standing community issues.
