You’d think that with almost 800 million people underfed or malnourished around the world today that there probably isn’t enough food to eat. But this is completely untrue: In fact, there’s 20% more food available than needed to meet everyone’s needs, and even most undernourished countries have a raw surplus of food. What’s going wrong? The obvious answer is that a lot of food is being wasted. New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Michael Harrison presented his 2017 budget proposal to City Council members Friday. This year, the New Orleans Police Department received the highest public approval rating it has gotten since 2009, and Harrison said he wants to keep that momentum going into next year. To maintain the positive public approval rating for 2017, one of Harrison’s goals is to increase funding for more recruiting and hire more civilian personnel for the department, so officers can focus on their policing duties. “This will enhance our abilities for crime analysis and crime scene processing without placing additional burdens on our commissioned police officers.

In a new article published in The Conversation, the GovLab’s Stefaan Verhulst breaks down data responsibility, and how — when properly used — data can save lives in crisis situations. Verhulst takes us to the 2015 earthquake in Nepal for an example. In the earthquake, which killed nearly 9,000 people, Nepal’s largest mobile network carrier, Ncell, shared its data with the Swedish nonprofit Flowminder. Flowminder was able to (anonymously) track the location of Ncell’s users throughout the country, and sharing that information with the Nepalese government and human rights organizations, aid was more effectively apportioned throughout the country. “Data responsibility — and corporate data sharing — is an emerging concept, still in development,” Verhulst writes.
