Pittsburgh has unveiled a data portal for government information that aims to be a ”one stop shop” — whether it’s logging and following a 311 request or keeping abreast of police activity. Launched Oct. 31, Burgh’s Eye View gives users the option to download data or view see it on a map that plots the location of arrests, permits, traffic citations, 311 requests city facilities and code violations. Information on the mobile friendly-site information is searchable as well. “Transparency and openness are essential to ensuring a responsive city government and thriving neighborhoods,” Mayor William Peduto said.

Government’s pivot toward open data can be seen with the passage of the Data Act in 2014 and the Obama administration’s focus on open government initiatives. But data standardization has not progressed at the rate necessary to take advantage of the growing amount of open data, a new report from the Data Foundation and Grant Thornton said. Hudson Hollister, interim president of the Data Foundation and founder of the Data Coalition, is enthusiastic about the potential that standardization has for making data more usable and integral to decision-making processes.

CYBERJAYA: Malaysia will be the first country in Asean to employ the World Bank-developed Open Data Readiness Assessment (ODRA) methodology to improve public service delivery, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Joseph Entulu Belaun. He said the ODRA would help the government to prepare for future challenges as Malaysia moved towards achieving the vision of becoming an advanced nation by 2020. This would be done by harnessing the power of open data for the public and private bodies to collaborate and communicate on iniatives that would improve the quality of the people’s life and well-being, he said.

The city of Suwanee has launched an open data website to allow residents more accessibility to the city’s financial data. City staff utilized a host of applications to publish the data in what they hope will be a more easy-to-read format, including charts and graphs, according to a press release. “We’re big believers in authenticity and transparency in government, and that certainly includes our financials. Our citizens should be able to easily access and understand our spending. At its most simplified, this is the taxpayers’ money, and it’s their right to know that we are being fiscally responsible for their dollars,” said Amie Sakmar, Suwanee’s Director of Finance.
