To paraphrase a newly familiar opening line, it was “a long time ago, in a breadbasket far, far away.” Nearly 4,000 years ago in faraway Egypt, Joseph interpreted Pharaoh’s dream of impending crop failure and was hired out of prison to manage the nation’s grain supply. Famine was averted and Egypt became a grain exporter. Across the Midwest today, as in Egypt at the time of Joseph’s promotion, crops have recently been faring quite well and productivity has never been higher. But there is looming uncertainty about the future — not because of a ruler’s dream, but because of episodes of extreme weather with increasing frequency and intensity globally — including here in the Midwest. And climate scientists tell us this is just the start.
