Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) plans to open data centres in Germany in partnership with Deutsche Telekom AG (DTEGn.DE), offering cloud storage to European businesses keen to safeguard their data from US surveillance. Access to customer data stored in Microsoft’s new data centers will be controlled by T-Systems, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom, Germany’s largest telecom utility, acting as a data trustee. The underlying context here is ongoing European concern over USA government mass surveillance practices and the impact those intelligence dragnets are having on the perception of data security in the commercial cloud. When it launches, Microsoft’s German customers will need to sign a contract that enables Deutsche Telekom’s T-Systems to act as the data trustee.
