To most, it’s considered failing. Nebraska earned a D-plus grade this year in a national investigative news organization’s ‘State Integrity’ survey, which ranks states on criteria such as accountability of elected officials, public access to information and political financing. Still, enough states fared poorly in results released Monday for Nebraska to secure an eighth-place ranking, according to the nonpartisan Center for Public Integrity, which conducted the survey. The center, which won a Pulitzer Prize for a different project in 2014, graded and ranked states in 13 categories using 245 specific measures. Each state’s “report card” was compiled by an experienced local journalist — in Nebraska’s case, former Journal Star reporter and current NET Radio host Dan Moser.
