The government’s £1.2m open data programme investment in 2013 will bring a tenfold return to the UK economy in three years, a report released by Nesta and the Open Data Institute calculated today. The Open Data Challenge Services was launched by the government’s Department of Business, Innovation and Skills to support teams and individuals using open data to generate new and sustainable solutions to social challenges. For every £1 invested the UK has seen between £5 and £10 generated, and the creation of 75 to 141 jobs. Tools and services developed by the Open Data Challenge Series winners include ‘Skills Route’, a personalised service helping young people see how well they could do on courses at local schools or colleges and to weigh up their higher education and career options.
