The city of San Diego became the first government agency in the region on Tuesday to adopt an open-data policy, a set of guidelines for releasing mountains of information about crime, traffic, business licenses and many other things. The goal is to boost transparency and spur innovation by allowing residents and aspiring entrepreneurs to harness the data for start-up businesses and clever solutions to local problems, Councilman Mark Kersey said. “It’s opening up the data and seeing what people can do with it for the betterment of the community,” said Kersey, who has spearheaded the city’s open data efforts during the last 18 months. “I can’t wait to see all the cool stuff that arrives out of this. A lot of it will be things we can’t even think of right now.
