Just as the static PDF is no longer sufficient to best represent scientific research outcomes that extend beyond the article, the static reference list at the end of a scholarly article is no longer sufficient to discover the depth of information contained within the network of those references. Current references are restricted in detail to author, article title and journal citation, limiting discovery. Proper author attribution and credit are also hampered as the full list of authors is often missing from reference entries and it is currently difficult to trace an idea back through the scientific literature to its first documentation in a publication.
