The Ottawa Police Service should make crime data open to the public to give residents an accurate picture of what’s going in the city, says a law professor at the University of Ottawa. Teresa Scassa, the university’s chair in information law, recently published a paper examining publicly available crime mapping tools used by police services in three Canadian cities: Ottawa, London, Ont., and Saint John, N.B. The Ottawa police crime map only shows calls for service in the last six months. While the assessment noted Ottawa’s map did a better job at warning users about its limitations, the professor came to the conclusion that all three are inherently problematic.
