New South Wales’ public transport smartcard could have some competition from credit cards New South Wales (NSW) commuters could soon use their credit cards to ‘tap on’ to public transport, following the announcement of a trial in 2017. NSW Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance kicked off the Future Transport Summit this week, announcing the State Government’s commitment to a trial in 2017 to allow customers to pay for public transport by tapping on and off with their credit and debit cards. “New South Wales is proud to be leading this Australian first. Contactless payment with credit and debit cards would offer customers another easy to use and convenient option for travelling,” Constance says.

On President Obama’s first day in office, he signed a decree. The Memorandum on Transparency and Open Government promised a new way of doing things. “Agencies should use innovative tools, methods and systems to cooperate among themselves,” he wrote. This applies “across all levels of government, and with non-profit organisations, businesses and individuals in the private sector.” What does this mean? That government should use tech to crowdsource ideas, share updates, and let sunlight into all levels of the executive. Obama brought Beth Simone Noveck into the White House to oversee this initiative. Seven years on, she notes how Americans became disillusioned with government’s approach.

The Australian Productivity Commission has launched a public inquiry into access and use of public and private data. The agenda of the inquiry is ambitious in both its timescale and its scope. So much so that it risks failing to achieve anything meaningful. At the heart of the inquiry is the desire to uncover the range and extent of benefits coming out of the increased provision, access and use of this data. These benefits could be anything from better health and lives for Australians to increased productivity and opportunities for private and public organisations. On the surface, it is quite reasonable to think that there would be positive uses for data coming out of the private and public sectors and even from individuals themselves.

The City of Potsdam attributes great value in the use of Open Data to improve the quality of living of its residents and its potential for the private sector. For this reason it has developed a concept for the necessary organisational, legal and technical conditions to implement an Open Data policy. If the concept is accepted by the City Council, the data will be released gradually through an Open Data portal. For this release the city has identified several Open Data priorities, such as construction and housing, spatial data and population, which will be released first. Delivery.com acquired on-demand alcohol delivery company BrewDrop. No financial terms of the deal were disclosed. The app BrewDrop app will shut down once the acquisition closes. As part of the deal, BrewDrop Co-Founder Andrew Bell will join delivery.com as Director of Market Development. His job will be to start expanding alcohol delivery to other parts of Texas, including Dallas and Houston. Bell is the only member of the BrewDrop team that will be making the transition to the new company. Delivery.com expects its alcohol-ordering customer base to increase by 10 percent right off the bat. OpenGov, which allows local governments to bring their data to the cloud, acquired Ontodia, a provider of Open Data and performance management solutions.

We’ve been hearing the same thing for years: Big Data will change things in a big way once it gets up and running. Widely revered as one of the biggest asset of the 21st century, Big Data is capable of creating tens of thousands of jobs and billions in revenue for the economy, and while we already have the technology and massive warehouses full to the brim of useful bit of big data, those revolutionary changes we keep hearing about will never have the opportunity to take shape if people can’t be reassured that Big Data won’t be misused. Since there are plans underway to use Big Data to fulfill roles with heavy responsibility, such as determining which university a student might attend or various levels of city planning, there is an obvious concern about the security surrounding Big Data.

The OPEN Government Data Act gained the endorsement of two stakeholder groups at an event on Thursday. The Data Coalition, a group of industry advocates for the publication of government data, and the think tank Center for Data Innovation hosted the event to kick off the bill’s introduction. The Open, Public, Electronic and Necessary, or OPEN, Government Data Act (pdf), would direct federal agencies to abandon proprietary data formats, publish their information in machine-readable, searchable formats, and compel them to justify any failure to publish data.
